John Scalzi Has Joined The Stargate Universe Team

Scalzi has also written comic SF, which is promising for the new series.
Well except those comic book writers who got fired from Heroes really frakked the show up by paying more attention to gimmickry than consistent characterization, confusing and annoying the audience and pushing the Nielsens off a cliff. As much as I slam Stargate writers, at least they keep characters essentially consistent, if static, from one episode to the next. So writing for comic books doesn't strike me as any guarantee of quality or even minimal competence.

I think what was meant (judging by the stuff you didn't quote) was that he has written comic SF as in "ha ha funny" SF, not comic books as you inferred.

^^^Yes, indeed. Agent to the Stars and Android's Dream are both humorous.

Scalzi is just a consultant, but having a real SF writer for a consultant is a novel departure. I'd be even more interested if it were, say, Jack McDevitt, but I'm easily pleased and will gladly hope for real contributions from Scalzi!

120 pages in to Agent to the Stars, and I'm rolling on the floor. I don't much care what Scalzi's role is in SG:U, it's going to be a much better show for it.

Any new blood Stargate can bring in is good. It is stale and needs fresh ideas.

And Old Man's War was fairly good, I'm finally about to crack open the The Ghost Brigades and see if Scalzi can keep it up.

They just don't keep too much recent scifi literature stocked in the PXs in Iraq, and I'm too cheap to buy it and get it sent over.

But all that is over now, stupid 15 month deployments.

This sounds like a good turn of events..something exciting is now in the air. Can't wait for the summer. I've read "Android's Dream" last summer. I had to get used to his writing style, but I enjoyed the book. I'm curious on how much consulting he will do for the show, and how long it will last.

JS is a great breath of fresh air in a lit field that has far too much stagnation and commercialization(-Halo, Warhammer, etc). I expect he'll do his best to give Universe a unique "flavor". As for scifi authors as consultants-I do believe B5 had Harlan Ellison-and look how that worked out....

Has he threatened to sue the B5 people over anything or launched into long, rambling rants over them yet? If not, then I guess it was successful. ;)
