Jodie Whittaker is the 13th Doctor

I saw some wacky quotes on the net like "Will the 13 Doctor menstruate? and so will she save the world if she has PMS?"

I sure we will hear it all in the next few months.

In other news, with the sad passing of Doctor Who, let us look back on forty-five of the most-loved deaths of Doctor Who.

Reading that list, it is an absolute miracle that Doctor Who is still alive.

Actually, this regen could net two doctors. The feminine and the valeyard. With missy and doc having to team up. But then that sets up a good female vs bad male ( possibly white male) political drama thing going forward. That may be also bad..

I'd like to see the origin of the Valeyard but I suspect that bit of canon might be ignored at this point.

I saw a come t today pointing out the subtle negativity of missys Malé side holding her back from going good while her female self really wanted to be good, till her old male self killed her.
Which..is a valid reading..kinda...but....people really do go a little far. Admittedly, Simms Master had already turned good guy path when playing catch the cgi with rasssilon...

I would like the think the Valeyard was created during Ten's regeneration into 11. Because it would have been between the doctors 12th and final incarnation. Also, since the doctor (10) was being very selfish about not wanting to go, there was a lot of negative energy that created the Valeyard and also severely damaged the Tardis. The Valeyard evened showed up a little later in the form of the dreamlord and showed up again as the person that said silence will fall (in the Tardis) that trapped River in the Tardis in 'The Pandorica Opens'

They stated the Valeyard was from between the 12th and last incarnations. That might have been written assuming 13 incarnations, but now it could be at any point.

Tennant2 was technically the 12th incarnation and anywhere between him and the 508th could be the Valeyard.

Well, Twelve is currently stuck not wanting to go either, so there could be some negativism there too. Still, the Master's description of the Valeyard as being from somewhere between the Doctor's "twelfth and final" incarnations" could be very broad indeed if he'd had knowledge of the Doctor's extended lifespan.

What the heck, the new Doctor is a woman?? Not watching.

Actually, for the real-real, when I watched the reveal video I got pretty worked up, shed a tear, and then thought about how long the wait is going to feel. I've felt pretty indifferent about Doctor Who during Capaldi's run (not for fault with Capaldi, just the direction they took him, to get it right for five minutes during series 10, and then going back to average level Moffat) so I was pretty ready to see something new and having the show change hands. With this announcement, I am thoroughly ready for more Doctor Who. I honestly expect it to feel like watching it for the first time all over again. And she's not just a lady, but she's like, a BEAUTIFUL and GROWN-UP lady.

I like that theory. I would argue that of all the modern doctors, Tennant's doctor showed his dark side the most. For example, there were many times when Tennant's doctor showed no mercy or acted in a very dark way. So I think it would have made sense for the show to address that dark side by having Tennant's doctor direct all of it into the Valeyard in order to expunge it. Then the show could have moved on to a nicer doctor. A this point, it would not really make sense to have the Doctor create a dark version of himself, especially after Capaldi's doctor makes a big deal about being kind.

Heard the name, have no real familiarity with it. Assumed it may be a nickname for something else. *shrug*

Hence the whoosh.

The BBC already do co-productions with American TV, HBO, Showtime, Amazon, Netflix, Starz, AMC, etc. and BBC America already Co-produce Doctor Who.

Indeed. If Auntie needs to co-fund Doctor Who, they already have numerous relationships with other studios. I wouldn't be surprised if one or a few Indy Production Companies have looked at making it.

Amblin and Cinema Verity looked at it as way back as the nineties. Realistically though, who is always going to be in house BBC and BBC worldwide. Crown jewels and copyright.

This is one of my concerns. They can't ignore the fact she's a woman BUT they can't be preachy about women's issues which means they have to frame it as general human rights nonsense. In the end both sides are going to be disappointed. I hope they don't write her as bland and non-offensive to protect the brand.

Last I heard, the movie rights are still not own by the BBC.

I think the idea there are sides is the nonsense. But..yes...I was pondering this. How would they approach something like The Girl In The Fireplace...thanks to recent years, we have a more heavily sexualised doctor...who is now a woman...who has therefore never been in that situation before.
Are they going to have her make lots of gender pointed remarks, complain about men being in power...and is that a fair continued portrayal of the character? Is it fair not raise those points when they arise naturally in the stories? There's a lot more to it that 'a doc in a frock' (as a fan poem long ago refered to the concept...ins..Skaro I I think.) and well...I don't see the new writing crew being up to balancing that all, even as I hope they are. She's basically likely to default back to the mostly asexual being of pre 2005 if they want to play it safe...and I am not sure that is what the audience expects anymore.

I always though Piccard's family was from Normandy. I hear they have British accents.
Why would they have British accents? The last time the English had anything close to control of Normandy was the 15th Century. And at that time the language of the English aristocracy was French.

I am less worried about the new Doctor Who being a female than I am about the stories she will be dealt. The stories stopped being interesting to me, and I did not completely watch the whole of the last season. I watched the first three episodes and the last episode. I am going into the new Doctor's era with low expectations.

It was 12th and 'Final' incarnation (see video below) at the time 11 was the final incarnation and would have died on Trensalore had the timelords not have changed history and gave the Doctor a new life cycle. So it means the Valeyard was between Tennant and Smith. Tennant's negativity during his regeneration released a ton regeneration energy that almost destroyed the Tardis but it also may have released the Valeyard who popped up later as the Dreamlord.
