Jodie Whittaker is the 13th Doctor

And will she have a Yorkshire accent or a more RP, "traditionally" English accent.

She actually reminds me a bit of Tennant. You have to have the right countenance...

Remember Genevieve Bujold 's approach to Janeway? A bit etherial? With Dr. Who being an infrequent series--you might have a chance to see what that might have looked like.

Something else....

She also reminds me of the Gary Oldman's take on Smiley

You can read any emotion you like into that face.

That's what you want.

She's about the same age as Matt Smith is now. That'd be unromanitcally funny enough.

Anyway, props to the bold choice to give us a non-male lead for Doctor Who. I strongly believe they'll pay it as straight as possible, with only lip service (no pun intended) paid to her gender in this incarnation, as they barely did for Missy, the General, or for that matter the Time Lords who've already gender-swapped in assorted Big Finish productions.

And, I have a seven year-old daughter who watches the show with me and my spouse. My wife loves Capaldi and we both look forward to watching a hero(ine) my daughter can potentially really look up to. This could be HER Doctor and I love the idea.

I'm not happy. Oh, I'll give it a go and hope she carries the role off well, but honestly, this feels like blatant sexism disguised as balance. Think for a moment: this was the only male hero little boys could look up to who solved his problems with his wits, not force. Who eschewed guns. Who talked to his enemies and always, always, always tried to give them the chance to back off and do the right thing just once. A hero who could even give big boys pause in their actions. Not Captain America, not Batman, not Superman, not even James T. Kirk could be relied upon to be a better role model. Chibnall's being a good little soldier and saying this is a fresh start, but wasn't he the one who not so long ago called it a gimmick? They've been signaling this for a few seasons now and there's little doubt this came down from the BBC as an edict.

Yes,
the Doctor is the product of an age of rampant sexism and male chauvinism . And yes, the early episodes were embarrassing in their treatment of female characters. But that has changed. There was nothing wrong with a mad man in a blue box.

Since we're now down to pandering to shrill social groups who seek validation with staged gimmicks, I hereby announce the formation of the American Doctor Coalition, dedicated to ending the strangle-hold Britain has held on the character.

I nominate Donald Trump as the 14th Doctor!

I think they just used stock footage of the TARDIS greenscreened into that forrest.
That key probably didn't materialize in her hand for real either. ;)
Yep. The perspective was all wonky, so I knew it was a VFX shot immediately, and didn't use the real prop (which makes sense for a variety of reasons). Looking closer, I thought I recognized it from one of the old season 2 publicity shots, on the grassy hills of New Earth. It looks like it's this one.

All this sexist broflake hysteria in people's posts and tweets is rather hilarious.

Actually I think it's deeply wrong, clearly the doctor is a man. A male man who drinks Martini and uses a Walther PPK, proving his manhood by bedding every female in sight, especially the bad guy's token girlfriend. I'm pretty there's been a mix up and they fully intend to cast Jason Statham really

In fact this is so troubling I seem unable to get erections, my masculinity has been so thrown out of true. Please BBC, tell me this has all been a terrible mistake.

What? This is...some rather conspiratorial nonsense.

Let's see. Other heroes who rely primarily on their wits:
Jean-Luc Picard
Sherlock Holmes
Columbo
MacGyver
Tyrion Lannister (sorta)
Hawkeye (the M*A*S*H version)
Odo
Virgil Hawkins

And let's not forget that this role model, like many of those you mentioned, has killed many people and has, on occasion, considered genocide. The Doctor is no saint.

Why does this *have* to be an edict of any kind? Nobody associated with the show in any way has suggested there was an edict that came down from Auntie Beeb. Furthermore, they've been laying the groundwork for this for the last two seasons at least; it's clearly not a sudden decision that Beeb mandated.

I find your argument strewn with gaping defects in logic.

The TARDIS is bisexual...

I though the TARDIS would be more like Captain Jack and be omnisexual, just stuck at being a blue box for most of eternity.

The new Doctor's smile reminds me of Matt Smith's smile at his Doctor seeing the TARDIS renewed or the first time.

I really liked those boots she was wearing...:p

Doesn't the regenerated Doctor turn up in the previous' costume at first?
