A part of me now fears his career is tainted with star wars, rise of skywalker is already projecting for a dismal opening. again the irony is telling because just exactly 10 years ago, star trek 2009 was on everybody's best science fiction film list of the 2000-2010 decade. I think SFX or empire even named Star Trek 2009 the best science fiction film of the decade. none of his star wars movies is going to be that remembered in this decade, if I was been really harsh, I think this decade will be more about the fall of star wars and JJ is an anchor to that.
Familiarity breeds contempt and The Rise of Skywalker is a Part 9. Not much can be done about that, regardless of the quality. I haven't seen it yet, but it doesn't change that fact. There were a lot of people who went to see a Star Wars movie because it was an EVENT (in all capitals). I wasn't awed by The Phantom Menace -- and neither were a lot of people -- but it did well because of how much of an event it was since it had been 16 years since Return of the Jedi. But with the The Rise of Skywalker, it's immediately following Star Wars films that came out in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. So now instead of "We're going to see a Star Wars movie!", it's "Oh, another Star Wars movie is out."
After a few years, The Rise of Skywalker might end up becoming a movie that's more appreciated after the fact. Or maybe not. But the lower box office should be expected now that Star Wars isn't as much of an event anymore.
