JJ Abrams considering Khan in next movie?

I want to see the Gorns. The Star Trek movie never really had an "Alien" looking antagonistic race for the Enterprise crew.

I agree, the Gorn or the Tholians would be cool. The Gorn could be made to look pretty badass with movie budget CGI if we moved *slightly* away from them just being overgrown lizards. Likewise the Tholians have the potential to be a pretty scary foe if done correctly.

Perhaps one of these races in conjunction with Khan, two seperate bad guys in one film?

Actually, wait. If they fight the Gorn, we will have to sit through months of the moral perfectionists telling us how Star trek has lost all sense of right and wrong, because in TOS the Federation never went to war with the Gorn.

While I think they could do an awesome job casting Khan, I don't think they're just going to do nothing with all that planet Vulcan-killing drama they created.

Why would they? They sold NuTrek as an "Action adventure in Space" and it worked, it's selling a lot, why would they change that formula for the sequel? Why do people expect the next one to be any different than this one.

They didn't explore the ramifications of destroying Vulcan in this movie at all, Why then would they slow down their next movie's pace, even for just a few minutes, to explore it then? I'd be extremely surprised if it got anything more than a quick mention in the next movie, something about "New Vulcan" being well underway and doing well and that's it, If we're lucky we'll get to see it a bit.

As for Khan, could be very good, and would fit the "Action Adventure" Mold they are going with very well. It would most likely be very different than either Space Seed or TWoK so would be interesting to see what's different this time, and the general movie going audience they are targeting may very well not have seen either of those two, perticularly Space Seed, so i doubt i doubt it would be much of an issue with them.

God I hope they don't revisit Khan or other elements from the original series. The year is now 2258, which is at least 6 or 7 years before Kirk took command of the NCC-1701 in the original timeline. I don't want to see a retread of what has gone before. A lot of what made Star Trek XI so enjoyabe was its sense of freshness. Thigns have been rebooted; there is a brand new reality/timeline to play with in which the future is unwritten; let's not revisit/retread villians from the original series and movies. Let's truly see what "new life forms" are out there!

I do love the idea of using the Tholians - they were so weird they're perfect for full-on CGI movie treatment.

Well, considering every Trek movie made in the past 15 years has been trying to copy elements from TWOK, they might as well just go ahead an remake the damn thing already.

Seriously though, a Khan re-imagining is a terrible idea, but I wouldn't put it past Abrams and his cohorts. They're clearly fans of TWOK, given how Trek XI basically masturbates to TWOK. What with the Ceti eels, the Kobayashi Maru, with the same sound effects, "I have been and always shall be your friend" and so on. I can tell they're just itching to do a Khan movie.

I can picture it being a combination of Space Seed and TWOK. Another Starfleet ship discovers the Botany Bay, awakens Khan and his followers, who then take over the ship and begin crusading the galaxy. It eventually becomes up to Kirk and the Enterprise to fight Khan as they go 'round the moons of Nibia and 'round the Antares maelstrom and 'round perdition's flame. Epic fights, pretty splosions, Nokia ad. And now you have the big blockbuster of 2011.

After the current film, I'm willing to put faith in the writers to pull something off in the right way. I wouldn't mind a retelling of the COMPLETE Khan saga in one film. From awakening to Genesis. I have no doubt Abrams and his writers could make it an epic.

I agree that they could. I think they could make a great Khan movie. I would certainly look forward to it.

That said, I think they could do better. I think better stories are within their purview and grasp.

Have Khan at some point. It fits in with their conception of "destiny," but can we please have one movie that does not involve some combination of planet destroyer ©, vengeful villain ©, and time travel ©?

I suppose I could live with that. This team could pull it off. I have no doubt they could cast an awesome Khan.

But I wouldn't be thrilled. After 40 years, I'm ready for something...fresh. That's what was so enjoyable about ST XI for me - it really does feel fresh and exciting again. I hope they'll be able to incorporate that into the next one. We've already had the Khan story. I don't think it needs to be revisited.

Plus...I'm a bit tired of "the Enterprise vs THE EVIL VILLAIN" scenario. It's been done to death. Can't the screenwriters come up with something more interesting than that? At least Nero was ostensibly a working class baddie. We didn't get the backstory in the movie, but it was there. Surely we've had enough mad planet destroying maniacs for awhile. Since Abrams and the boyz are definitelty into action movie mode, I'm not holding out much hope. But there's got to be a more exciting story out there than rehashing Khan.

I'd actually prefer to see a plot that was "bigger" than chasing down a baddie gone mad, something that requires a bit more ingenuity and complexity from the writers. I ain't holing my breath, but I have hope.

Well, TWOK *is* the best Trek movie ever, especially regarding Kirk and Spock. So you really SHOULD start with the best TOS movie as your template if you're, you know, making a TOS movie.

Javier Bardem has been mentioned as Khan, which seems rather brilliant.

And yeah, Khan may have become Trek's "Joker," the character that you have to bring on stage at some point.

I'd rather they did something completely original instead. Well, as original as you can be in the context of a re-hashed '60s tv series, anyway. Seriously, though, they're starting from the beginning. The sky's the limit here. They can do anything now. I just don't think revisiting Khan is a good idea. Besides, Nero was very Khan-like, anyway, in his Captain Ahab style quest for revenge against the person he believes is responsible for the death of his wife. So how about not doing back-to-back movies about a crazed madman out to destroy the galaxy?

well did tos ever take the time and explore the implications of kirk's actions in the apple, return of the archons,a taste of armageddon. as much as i loved tos they really passed up some really great stories by not going back at least once to see just how things did work out.

considering in the end we find out it was a mistake (the gorn believed the outpost was a prerunner of an invasion just like kirk thought the attack on cestus was the set up for an invasion) kirk probably would have started a war if he had destroyed the gorn ship without being able to communicate with them.

Yeah, this is why I would have trepidation about using the Gorn as a primary villain; "Arena" was about avoiding a war, it would feel wrong to say, "well in this timeline no understanding is reached." Maybe a single Gorn character, not affiliated with his government.

The Tholians, on the other hand, I could see. Based on their behavior in the Prime Universe, they seem to have their pincers into all sorts of nefarious stuff. You would need a human(oid) face for the villain, though, perhaps their agent in the Federation. I don't think we want Kirk carrying on conversations with a CG silicate lifeform.

Honestly, I completely trust Abrams and Co. to do the right thing with the next film. They've earned my trust enitirely, and if they want Khan or Shatner (or both) in there, then I'm all for it.

Whatever they decide on is gonna be awesome.

I think the next film needs a big-name actor. It would be very unlikely to be able to count on such positive reviews as this film, and the novelty of it will be gone.

Perhaps this is the chance to use Tom Hanks, after they weren't able to get him across the line for First Contact? Plus, it simply must have Reece Witherspoon after her Vulcan salute...

we know so little about them beyond that they are some of the most alien aliens
ever seen on trek.
except they dont like being lied to and have a reputation for being punctual.

I agree, someone like Hanks might be good but if they're going to do a Khan film I can't see them fitting him in like that, unless he played the Captain of whatever ship encounters Khan. I'd prefer it to be a mix of Space Seed and TWoK.

Hanks is just too 20th century. Witherspoon maybe.

But IMHO the best thing about a lot of the Trek movies is the quality of the guest actors - Christopher Plummer, Malcolm MacDowell, even F. Murray Abraham almost made INS bearable. We need someone with class on screen, our own Alec Guiness.
