Jeyl's Nitpicks on XI (Spoiler Heavy)

Re: Loved the movie but (insert nit pick here)

I only had 3 real nit-picks...

1. Chekov was painful, especially some of the accent jokes. I don't know why, but I wasn't a fan of him.

2. The engineering was a little disappointing. What we saw is believable as the bowels of a ship, but I would have imagined engineering as something more "habitable" or "accessable".

3. The Orion's paint job just looked bad.

Re: Loved the movie but (insert nit pick here)

Here's my nitpick (Which I cannot state clearly enough). Uhura wasn't made First Officer! Argh!

As opposed to...?

If you mean they didn't write the story that way, that's one thing. But within the context of the story on film, she did not demonstrate anything that makes her not being appointed an incorrect choice.

Re: Loved the movie but (insert nit pick here)

Loved:

  • Sylar as Spock.
  • Uhora. For the first time she had a real role. And purpose!
  • Spock & Uhora in love. That was a nice twist.
  • The destruction of Vulcan. YES. I did like it.
  • Kirk (though I wouldn't say "love", but it's pretty close)

Didn't like:

  • Checkov. He was... something. I just didn't like.
  • Women had NO role outside Uhora. And even in the background there were few of them. Look: Western navies TODAY have about 20% female populations. In the future, I can't believe it's under 40% (I accept that most females, by instinct, won't relish a marshal career like men typically do). But their numbers were paltry to the point of being blatantly sexist.
  • Engineering. Looked like a gigantic Budweiser brewery. Don't get me wrong, I really wanted a tall frosty one when it was over... but a water turbine? Really?
  • Subspace transporting. That had to be REALLY new to the TNG universe (probably captured from the Dominion and refined by Alpha Scotty... maybe). Okay. Nitpick withdrawn. But you see what I mean.
  • The ship being built on Earth
  • Not seeing Nero kick the asses of some Klingon guards OR not getting to see Kirk's abusive unlce.
  • The new stardates (yeah, it had to be made digestible to other people). He should have just made them sound stardate-ish for the trekkies, ie: [today's date] 20090508 and not pronounce them with dated inflections.
  • Kirk became captaion WAY too quick. There's no way an organization would do that. Nuh-uh! They might commendate him. They might advance him directly to CDR, but he would definately need to work under a captain for a while. IMHO, having served in the navy, I know that running a ship is complicated... infinitely so in the future.

Nit: Their names are Chekov and Uhura

Why would Uhura be made a First Officer ?

I suppose you two haven't seen 'Pirates of the Caribbean'? ;)

Can't speak for him, but I haven't. Why does it matter?

I have but don't remember that much. What's the connection ? :)

Re: Loved the movie but (insert nit pick here)

My only problem was that the IMAX theater I went to (Brooklyn, NY) had "technical problems" and the movie was delayed almost 1 1/2 hours. Then we found out why. The movie stopped downloading at 75% and the couldn't reconnect to the (Paramount?) server to resume the download. Of course, being the PITA I am, I had some remarks for them, like "Use a better torrent" or "go down the block and buy a bootleg", and of course "upgrade from the 56k modem". Who knew they download the movies (at least for IMAX). The two other theaters with the regular version were okay.

Re: Problems with the film?

Vulcan sky: it changes, here and there, just like ours. The sky was red here last night, as a matter of fact.

Spock and Uhura: He's someone who hold himself back when he communicates, and she's a communication expert. Who better to read what he's actually saying than her?

Chekov's accent: it's a lot more accurate than Koenig's.

Enterprise's look: it's different due to how the Federation perceived the threat of Nero's mysterious killer ship, after it took out the Kelvin. They beefed things up.

Joe, likes beef
