Jeyl's Nitpicks on XI (Spoiler Heavy)

Re: Loved the movie but (insert nit pick here)

Why didn't anyone question why Nero and the other Romulans looked like Vulcans?

Re: Loved the movie but (insert nit pick here)

Didn't mind the look of engineering, but I would have liked to have had a better sense of scale (looked too sprawling, even for a "bigger" ship--assuming it is bigger).

Thought there would be a bit less of a celebratory tone near the end to reflect the immense loss of life with the destruction of Vulcan (I know they wanted to end on a note of optimism, but such a cataclysmic event should have dampened spirits a bit). This would have been less jarring to me if a text blurb said something like 1 or 2 years later (which would also have made Kirk's promotion a touch more "realistic").

These are minor points and relative criticisms, though. None of them are any more than mildly and momentarily bothersome to me.

All in all, I consider this easily as successful a relaunch of Star Trek as I do Batman Begins and Casino Royale of their respective "properties". I already want to see it again (though with my schedule, it will be a few weeks or more before I do--that's why I did all I could to catch an IMAX screening while it is there).

Re: Loved the movie but (insert nit pick here)

Why is a warp core explosion able to propel a ship faster than its maximum warp?
Perhaps the controlled release of energy is insufficient to overcome the gravity well but the uncontrolled, immediate release of energy provides the extra oommphh necessary. I for one am glad we didn't get a 10 minute dissertation on it with references to a bunch of technobabble. Scotty thought it might work, he did it (they had nothing to lose at that point) and he turned out to be correct. Just the way something like this SHOULD be treated in a story.

Because Romulans ARE Vulcans (biologically speaking) and those silly forehead bumps are an invention of TNG-era Trek.

Re: Loved the movie but (insert nit pick here)

I thought most of the score and sound work was excellent, but there was one piece that was directly taken from Lost and that was distracting.

Re: Loved the movie but (insert nit pick here)

More nits:

How far away from Vulcan was the ice planet? If Old Spock can see Vulcan being destroyed from there, it would have had to have been close enough to get sucked into the black hole.

How far away was Enterprise (traveling at warp) from the ice planet when Scotty and Kirk beamed onto it?

Nero hanging around for 25 years just to torture Spock...I just don't buy it.

Kirk's demeanor on Kobyashi Maru. He should have played it more seriously as if he really had discovered a way to win. His actions made it look like he wanted to get caught. Maybe he did. I don't know.

Kirks promotion to Captain was very contrived.

Why not take out the Hobus star ASAP rather than leave it to the Romaulan (who failed before to do it). Were I Nero, after destroying the Kelvin, that would have been my first priority.

Transporter must somehow eliminate kenetic energy. Kirk and Sulu were traveling VERY fast in the Vulcan atmosphere when they got trasported.

So Vulcan is destroyed. And there are only 10,000 survivors? So, this ancient spacefaring race didn't have any colonies?

Re: Loved the movie but (insert nit pick here)

If Archer was still around, then presumably T'Pol would still be alive. She should have had a major role.

Although I suppose she could have died in the Romulan War or something.

Problems with the film?

I saw the film yesterday, and after coming out of the cinema, I couldn't say that I had been blown away as I was expecting, however on reflection it wasn't actually a bad film, and if anything is going to re-energise the franchise, I do believe it would be this.

The problems that I had issues with were:

Why was Vulcan's sky not red? - Picky I know;

Why did they make Spock and Uhura get together? That for me came totally out of left field.

Are they going to be continuing with this timeline as an alternate to the one we all know, as that future would have been massively changed.

I thought the new Chekov's accent was quite annoying and seemed to me to be quite put on.

Why has the Enterprise changed in look, although I liked it, is it supposed to be a pre-refit model?

Re: Loved the movie but (insert nit pick here)

Loved:

  • Sylar as Spock.
  • Uhora. For the first time she had a real role. And purpose!
  • Spock & Uhora in love. That was a nice twist.
  • The destruction of Vulcan. YES. I did like it.
  • Kirk (though I wouldn't say "love", but it's pretty close)

Didn't like:

  • Checkov. He was... something. I just didn't like.
  • Women had NO role outside Uhora. And even in the background there were few of them. Look: Western navies TODAY have about 20% female populations. In the future, I can't believe it's under 40% (I accept that most females, by instinct, won't relish a marshal career like men typically do). But their numbers were paltry to the point of being blatantly sexist.
  • Engineering. Looked like a gigantic Budweiser brewery. Don't get me wrong, I really wanted a tall frosty one when it was over... but a water turbine? Really?
  • Subspace transporting. That had to be REALLY new to the TNG universe (probably captured from the Dominion and refined by Alpha Scotty... maybe). Okay. Nitpick withdrawn. But you see what I mean.
  • The ship being built on Earth
  • Not seeing Nero kick the asses of some Klingon guards OR not getting to see Kirk's abusive unlce.
  • The new stardates (yeah, it had to be made digestible to other people). He should have just made them sound stardate-ish for the trekkies, ie: [today's date] 20090508 and not pronounce them with dated inflections.
  • Kirk became captaion WAY too quick. There's no way an organization would do that. Nuh-uh! They might commendate him. They might advance him directly to CDR, but he would definately need to work under a captain for a while. IMHO, having served in the navy, I know that running a ship is complicated... infinitely so in the future.

Re: Problems with the film?

The only problem I had with the film is that the sequel wasn't played immediatley afterwards.

Re: Loved the movie but (insert nit pick here)

I was pretty annoyed at the way it didn't seem to occur to Kirk and Spock that the Narada was trapped by the singularity and that they just might want to get the hell out of there rather than finish Nero off; it was so hamfisted that the later struggle to escape the singularity had little tension to it.

They're cadets, or at least, have just graduated mere moments before that. What else would they do? They don't have a large amount of experience to draw upon, after all...

On the flip side: The fact that the entire Enterprise bridge is crewed by recent ex-cadets doesn't seem inspiring.

Anyone taking bets on The Federation completely and utterly being destroyed by the incompetence of all cadets in the next movie? :D
