JD's Comic Book Thread

It's not just the readers and creators Dynamite has to consider here. Most of their best-selling titles are of licenced characters. Red Sonja, James Bond, Vampirella, the companies licencing these characters to Dynamite might also not be happy about such a publicity nightmare, and I'm pretty sure publishers like Dark Horse, Boom or IDW would be very happy to pick those up. Not to mention Marvel probably already trying to get Red Sonja back.

I've read the James Bond series and some of The Boys--so I guess I have read their stuff. That is a very good point that a lot of those companies they license from are not going to want to associate themselves with this. Look at how hard the Hugo's fought back--I am sure there was a lot of support behind the very visible push for inclusion and equity there.

Bond is Dynamite? I did buy the first collection of the first Bond series and had planned on reading more, but now I probably won't. I thought it was Boom! or one of the other companies that had Bond.

Yes, Bond is at Dynamite, I'm afraid. I was about to suggest trying to get the books second hand, but I remembered you read digital.

I've been reading most of my comics through the digital library app Hoopla, so I can just stick with that, since at least that way money won't be going to Dynamite.

Well, that was my thinking behind going second hand, so that works, too.

It appears that Dynamite accomplished alienating everybody.

Dynamite cancelled their two Comic-Con@Home panels.

One of them, their James Bond panel, was scheduled for Thursday morning, so this is very sudden. Considering these panels were probably pre-taped some time ago and they don't really have to worry about being confronted with loud protesters disturbing the show, I guess there's either some rumbling going on behind the scenes, or they're trying to lay low for a while. If it's the latter, well, the cancellation is making the rounds on the news sites bringing the whole controversy back into the public's attention, so this move would be right on track with their other stupid strategic decisions.

Edit: Okay, this is even weirder, because they'll still stream their Vampirella panel. Wtf?!

I didn't read Trinity--curious to know what you think.
Well, I'm not enjoying it overmuch. To be honest, I'm finding the whole thing more and more of a struggle as I go on.

My initial enjoyment and enthusiasm for the new dynamic (Supes and family on the farm, being the replacement Superman etc.) was pretty quickly lost with the reset and return to Metropolis and it's been one uninspiring arc after another in Superman and Action Comics. Supersons underwhelms as does Trinity. And Supergirl's just plain bad.

I'm just into 2018 now so my target of the Bendis stuff is coming into sight if I can last that long.

Hope it's worth it.

--it is a pretty big reset. I was enjoying the version of Luthor as an anti-hero and Superman and Lois as parents of a young child. In the last couple of years Bendis has taken things in interesting directions of his own, but it is a shame that he didn't feel like he could create his own story and build on the cool stuff that had been set up in Rebirth.

Right, so Tom King made a bit of an ass of himself today. DC has solicited his new "Rorschach" mini-series to launch in October, and today revealed a variant cover for #1 by Jae Lee. Tom King took offense to that, because Lee did a variant cover for an independent one-shot by major Comicsgator Ethan Van Sciver.
Already, a bit iffy on the whole "cancel by association" basis, considering artists who don't have a steady job at one of the Big Two don't always have the luxury to be picky about jobs offered.
Now, Jae Lee explained that he didn't even know about Comicsgate until long after he did that cover for Van Sciver, and has since declined to work for him again.

Well, Jae Lee isn't on Twitter, which is why it took so long for him to learn about Comicsgate, and that got him accused of being involved with them. So, I don't know if abandoning Twitter altogether is really the lesson here.

For something more rewarding (or awarding, get it?), here's this year's Eisner Award ceremony (held online for obvious reasons) hosted by voice actor extra-ordinaire Phil LaMarr:

If people didn’t have a platform for kneejerk reactions (ie King on Twitter, and he's certainly not the first), this would have been avoided. I absolutely despise twitter and the megaphone it gives to thoughts that should NOT be made public for the world to see.

Regarding the Eisners, LaMarr is an inspired choice as host!

If you read Tom King's retracting of his statements about Jae Lee, you know he concluded with "We're all good". Well, Lee disagrees:

Two weeks ago, June and I took Loki to San Diego to see a specialist. He did not survive due to complications from the surgery. This past Friday was supposed to be a day of mourning. We were back in San Diego to pick up his ashes. We were going to take him to the beach and comfort each other by sharing our favorite stories about our little boy.

Instead, a part of the internet I avoid like the plague came barging in. I had companies I'm working for calling me, friends reaching out to me. I'm seeing hate pouring out of strangers' mouths, accusing me of things I have no knowledge of.

I'm seeing first hand how fast lies are spreading. Let me be clear, I'm not part of ANY group.

We never made it to the beach. We spent the entire six hour drive back home on an emotional roller coaster.

I'm writing this because I'm angry. These irresponsible tweets are not harmless. They do not just go away. They have real world consequences. They can take away your job. Your life. Your memories. June and I were robbed of a special day. So, no, we're not "all good."

This isn't the start of a conversation. This is the end. So please, don't drag me into a world I never wanted to be a part of, nor will I ever want to be a part of.

I want to honor Loki by going back to producing art made with love. For people who enjoy it for what it is. Something that hopefully brings joy into their lives.

Mommy and Daddy miss you so very much, Loki, our love.

And re-reading King's retracting, I did notice that he did not apologize, as if he did nothing wrong and it was just a harmless misunderstanding. I mean, he even ended with "Best possible outcome." Considering the current climate, such accusation can indeed be harmful. I mean, there's gotta be some people who just run with King's accusation as fact, regardless of what's been happening since. So, yes, this could have been career-ending on a normal day, not even accounting for Lee's situation on that day.

Is Loki his son or his pet? Either way it is a truly horrible experience. King hopefully feels like crap right now and will learn from this experience. Not sure how either of them moves forward from here though.
