JD's Comic Book Thread

Can anyone recommend any books that are like Identity Crisis? You know, stories that are more personal, or have a greater impact on a character emotionally, vs random big bad of the month? I just read Identity Crisis and its one of the best stories I've enjoyed since I got back into comics. I also just bought The Death of Jean Dewolfe, so books along that line interest me most.

Also I grew up Marvel, but recently got into Batman and wanted to expand to reading more DC characters. Which books are the most recommended? I want to try Superman (I bought All-Star Superman and World's Finest but haven't read them yet) and Wonder Woman. I like the Flash tv series, how does the books hold up? Any recs?

i wouldn't say it is similar to Identity Crisis but Starman is a really personal and emotional book.

as far as new DC books, i really like Detective Comics. Action Comics and Superman are good too, but might be a bit continuity heavy for newcomers. Wonder Woman is good so far. i'd recommend it.

Do you guys know of any good comics about superheroes and their pets?

Today's the last day of DC's "Flashpoint Sale", which also includes all of the New 52 Vol 1s and I was thinking about getting either Action Comics or Superman. Which would you guys recommend?

Action Comics is pretty good although to get the full story you'll need the second volume as well. It does get a little Grant Morrison-y at times.

Sadly, Superman was not good. There's no reason to read that book until Greg Pak takes over a few years into the run.

OK, that was what I thought, but I couldn't remeber for sure. I'll get AC and I'm also getting Justice League. I read the first issue of JL when it first came out and I've been meaning to at least finish the first arc. Usually I'd just get the rest of the single issues, but at this point it'll be cheaper to get the collection.

To be fair, that's not the fault of the writers (except maybe Scott Lobdell, but he wasn't around until later), but because of editorial meddling causing them to leave before they could really focus the book. George Perez told a good story, but left after six issues leaving some subplots hanging, and Jurgens & Giffen had some good ideas, but also left after a few issues.

yeah, they tried putting Clark and Lucy Lane together. then someone had the idea of making Superman and Wonder Woman a couple and its like they completely forgot about Lucy. they also had Superman fighting Helspont, which i thought was pretty interesting. but that didn't last long either.

I've been having trouble with my Nookbook version of JLD V1. I had archived it after I read it years ago on my old Nook, and now I can't get it to download onto my current Samsung tablet. It has uncharchived, but after I try to download it it won't open. It'll go through the download counter all the way to 100, but then it won't open, and if I close and the reopen app it says the book hasn't been downloaded.
Edit: I decided to pick up Demon Knights too. I've been in the mood for a fantasy comic and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to get one I've been wanting to read for a while now.

I am soooooo behind on my comic book reading, but I did manage to read Reborn #1 by Millar and Capullo this morning. Damn. It was good. Really intriguing story being set up and the art and colouring were just amazing.

This is the first I've heard of that one, sounds interesting.
I started rereading the New 52 Wonder Woman a while back. I got the last dozen or so issues on sale a while back, but I haven't read the others in a while, so I decided to just start over and reread the first 4 collections, before moving onto the ones I haven't read yet. I reread #0 but, changed my mind about what comics I wanted read and switched to the Star Wars (current Marvel series) Vol. 2 instead.
WW#0 was a nice look at how she developed into the hero she is today, and it was interesting seeing her being trained by War. I'll post my thoughts about SW book in the Star Wars books thread.

The only thing by Miller I've read is the first collection of his Fantastic Four run, which I did enjoy.

The first Millar book I read was Starlight and I enjoyed it so much I decided to give a few of his other books a try. I've since read Chrononaughts, Huck, and Empress and I enjoyed them all.

As far as the rebirth titles go, I am only caught up on the Superman titles, which I am really enjoying. I've read about 5 or 6 issues of both Batman and Wonder Woman and I am almost up to date on Justice League. I am strongly considering dumping Justice League. I have not been all that impressed with it so far.

As for Marvel, I think I am about 4 or 5 months behind on pretty much all the titles on my pull list. I really should catch and see if I actually want to continue getting all of them.

I've been meaning to check that out, but real life has been getting in the way of my comic book reading.

The two Jupiter's Circle volumes are spin-offs to Jupiter's Legacy. I assume the confusion is over the fact that the word "Legacy" makes it seems like it would come later (rather than first). [Note: I just purchased these volumes as part of the comixology Image 50% off sale. I haven't read them yet.]

Counter intuitively the 2 volumes of Legacy (that have not completely finished yet) comes before the 2 volumes of Circle... Even though Circle is a prequel that starts in the mid 1960s, while Legacy begins "now" and then leaps forward to the 2020s.

There's an over lap in publication dates because the the two series were sometimes coming out simultaneously, and not sequentially.

Does anyone know what's going on with Winterworld by Chuck Dixon over at IDW? I've tweeted Dixon a few times to see if there will be more issues but I've gotten no response.
