JD's Comic Book Thread

I don't think I posted in here yet that I read Star Wars: Legacy Vol 5: The Hidden Temple. I really enjoyed this one. It wasn't a big action issue, but there were some nice character moments, and we found out why Jariah hates Jedi whic I don't think had been explained yet. Do they ever explain why we didn't see K'Kruhk and T'ra Saa during the whole New Republic/NJO/Early Legacy eras?

I believe K'Kruhk and some other Jedi holdouts set up their own temple apparently on an isolated planet.

T'ra Saa presumably because she was no longer mobile by then and had anchored herself to that spot.

But the real reason is because the main writer for these characters in Republic and Legacy had almost no involvement in those eras you listed and Dark Horse was on the out with the Novel Franchise and Del Rey over NJO (it was intended as a collaboration between comics and novels originally).

Thanks. I didn't realize the people behind the novels and comics had a falling out over NJO, but I did wonder why the suddenly seemed to stop connecting to each other.

Still catching up on books from last week, hit my Indie pile.

Divinity #3 - Some nice revelations in this issue and an expansion on the broader ideas on how Abram seemed to gain his powers. Still, it was very broad strokes and leaves VALIANT room to expound on specifics later. The "fight" with UNITY felt very forced and was the weakest part of the book. I'm still a bit confused on the ending with his wife&daughter though. Did they get pulled through time separately? Are they in the present?

Black Hood #3 - I'm not really familiar with other incarnations of this character but I understand this Dark Circle imprint is going to be edgier versions of them and this book keeps delivering thus far. I was a fan of the writer on Dark Horse's 'X' and he's bringing the same tone here. I like how Greg spent the issue trying to get ahold of his addiction & his speech therapy as he realized he needed to in order to fully commit to this double life as the Hood.

Solar Man of the Atom #11 - this is arc of this series has finally shown what the title should've been from the get go. Not only is it getting solid with the Dr.Spektor crossover but Eclipse as his nemesis makes this arc much more worth reading. Then, we finally get Phil back in solid form just in time for the last issue. No more playing the role of Prof.Stein like the last 7/8 issues which was part of the dullness I felt.

I just realized that Arrow's EP/Writer Marc Guggenheim worked on Spidey's Brand New Day. Very cool.

I just finished up ASM: Brand New Day vol. 3.
This one was lot of fun. As much as people hated him for it, Spidey's powers really are a good match for a paparazzi career.
Paper Doll was cool villain, she would be an interesting one to see in a movie.
I've been waiting for his visit to The Bar With No Name, so that was fun.
Do we see any more of Screwball after this? She was fun.
How much longer does the Spider-Tracer Killer story go on for? I was expecting this to be the end.

Anyone pick up Secret Wars? I haven't been reading the Avengers but I still managed to follow the story. It was pretty good. The art is fantastic.

^^^^
I'm trade waiting Secret Wars. They already solicited the OHC for the main series. It'll be cheaper to read that way after the online retailer 1/2 off price week of release. I read the spoilers about just the laundry list of characters who died in issue 1 and it's clear those deaths aren't to be taken seriously. It's going to play out like that time loop episode of ST:TNG till our heroes escape the loop and lots of what happened in issue 1 is instantly undone.

I read Red One #2 and that will be it for me. I'll not be picking up the next 'micro-mini' in 2016 that will be 2-3 more issues and likely also not present an ending.

I do not see the logic in doing this, even if it's European model as Dodson explained in the back. It's not remotely like a 10 episode TV show then waiting a year for more. You've just introduced a character. On the characters first real outing you end it on a cliffhanger before the reader has really decided about just how vested they are to care enough--a year later.

I'll be happy to pick up a collected edition that contains 3-4 "Books" and tells a complete story but for now I'm out on Red One in 2016.

It does seem a bit odd to do it that way. It felt like they were just getting warmed up. I liked it though. I'll check out the next set of books they put out.

And is it just me or the art in Red One look better than what they are doing over in Princess Leia?

I'm hooked on "Red One". The first issue was okay, but the second issue was tremendous and I don't mind waiting on their model, I do agree that it's different for us, but if that means quality each time then I'm all for waiting.

Yesterday I finally decided to stop putting if off and got the first collection of Neil Gaiman's Sandman. I read the first issue and really enjoyed it.

Secret Wars #2 is so vastly different from #1 it's startling.

If SW #1 was the movie Independence Day, then SW #2 was the first episode of Game of Thrones.

It's definitely a reading experience unlike any others. You'll need a few readings through, at least, to fully appreciate everything. Having a good working knowledge of mythology (the usual Greek/Roman, Norse, etc., as well as myths from around the world), the DCU, among many other things will help, as will this site.

Have any of the Endless or other Sandman characters appeared in any of the main DCU titles?
