Jayru (JSnaith's) 3D Trek

Workin on it. I posted a wip.

*edit after making a basic shape to cut with a sphere to make the bridge, getting the sphere to match the curvature of the bridge cut is proving difficult. to make matters worse, the bridge and there sphere synced up, so moving the sphere also moved the bridge, they wouldn't move independently. Gave up and did a revert. smh. infuriating

Edit 2: I am simply unable to get the boolean cut to work. either it cuts the bridge out of the sphere (boolean wrong direction) or it destroys the bridge far beyond the cut.. destroys the mesh completely. I dont understand this, the video made it soooo simple. this should be taking 5 minutes not and hr.

Start with a basic cylinder, which you taper so the base is bigger than the top. Now, extrude the back half. Create a box bigger than the cylinder, move it so it overlaps the back end of the cylider. Use boolin to subtract the box and leave a nice cut. Create another cylinder at a 90-degree angle to the main one, and move it so it intersects the front half of the original cylinder. Use boolin to subtract the second cylinder. If need be, create another box and use boolin again to make the top flat. You should have your outer shell. Now, create half a sphere and move that into the frame. Basic, but if you get the idea you can refine it to make a TMP-esq bridge. Building in 3D is about seeing the basic shapes.

And yes, I suck at instructions and explaining things. I don't do tutorials or videos. I know my limitations.

Between you and a couple other people I think I got an idea how to attempt it. Then its off to the spotlight sheds, which are hopefully easy, and the saucer will be done. then I will probably try the impulse deck and shuttlebay. I've been getting advice from scifi meshes too lol.

I found some issues with my TOS ships. Holes in places where holes shouldn’t be. Texture maps misaligned, and some details missing. Stuff that bugs me.

I am, by nature, a perfectionist.

Those of you who remember the original Ingram Project have a rough idea of just how many times I rebuilt parts of those ships before I felt comfy enough to say “they’re done.” Every time I rebuilt, I made things better – and in this case, more screen-accurate. So, I am back at the 3D coal-face again, working on the TOS ships. This time I have plans for more than just the three I’ve generated in the past; I plan to get as much of a fleet as I can out of this, some stations and maybe an orbital Star base. And finally? Era-appropriate Klingon and Romulan ships.

It’s ambitious for me, but very appropriate – Star Trek hits 60 this year, and TOS is where it all began. It deserves some love as we get close to the 8th September. I want to celebrate the birthday, even if it’s only as small as some 3D models.

As for the rest, you guys know I’m battling on with my health. It’s a losing battle, but I’m not dead yet. The last few weeks have been pretty terrible for me, but I am feeling more like myself at the moment. I’m not going to sugar-coat it, I still feel pretty yuck – just not as yuck as the last few weeks. Updates will happen as and when, but I assure you they will happen.

Anyway, more soon.

My rebuilt base Constitution:

Again, this is a 400-meter build, but it retains the deck layout as specified in the series. Window patterns have been kept and aligned with the decks. Windows have been enlarged by 25% to give the "look and feel" of the studio model without compromising on size.

From this, I will get the Saladin, Ptolemy, and a few other classes.

More soon.

Then there's the problem of just how large the Starfleet is. So a video the other day that proposed in an effectively serious manner a fleet size of over 100,000 front line ship, especially in the TNG era.

I have been chewing on this concept for several days now. I find the argument compelling.

So basically your field is wide open.

However, I have been playing around with the Enterprise numbers. There should have been at least a dozen NX-01 class ships ready for launch in the first episode of Enterprise...

In other words folks, play.

Have you idealised the bridge superstructure? It looks both not quite screen accurate, and also very, very good.

The cargo pod on the Ptolemy is interesting, is that meant to be all one structure or is it a bunch of smaller pods hooked together with a couple of "these must go on the end" on, well, the ends? One thing I always loved about Mr. Joseph's decign was the idea of a "space train" with the tug hauling six or seven pods. The problem with his setup up being it would look weird in turns - and to the extent that physics applies to Trek, would have a lot of lateral g-forces in the end pod. Your design looks like it might articulate, letting the structure curve under inertia and solving both the in-character and out-of-character problems.

The bridge structure is accurate to the plans I'm using, but because you can see into the rooms behind the windows, it might give the impression of not being accurate ;-)

Yes, the Ptolemy cargo pods are modular, which makes a lot of sense in-universe. The idea of a "modular" fleet is an excellent idea, so far I have only had to make a few custom pieces to complete different frames.

No on the NEWS -

I have been given a date for my heart op. It's a 2-4 week stay in hospital, if everything goes to plan. I will be admitted on 19 June, with the op scheduled to happen on 29 June.

I only found out today (in the last few hours), so my plans as such are now up in the air. I will do what I can before the 19, but no promises, as we have a lot of things to sort out. My original plan for today was to start work on a Romulan Bird of Prey; hopefully, I can get back to it tomorrow and share some renders.

As for the Fed ships: I've created base meshes that are easy for me to slap names and reg numbers onto, giving me a lot of freedom, but for now, the Odyssey, Hera, Nelson, Zakatutu are labelled up and ready. I plan to add the Eagle or Polaris Class (or both) to the rostar. The Eagle is the more likely of the pair, as I have all the parts I need right now.

I will NOT be able to work on 3D stuff whilst in hospital, so it will be another enforced break. Fingers crossed, I will be back at some point in July. Failing that, provisions have been made.

More soon.

I need to skip over the art stuff for a moment....

You are a (amazing/wonderful/lovely/great) human being. We got to know you through your art. The key words are.... GOT TO KNOW.
We love your art, your designs, your amazing skill at 3D art. But above all of that, the true humans here love you. So make sure you are ok and healthy first, ok? That is the priority.

What about the Klingons? Vulans? Andoriams? Organians?...

Great work as always and take care of your health first, the board won't go anywhere. :)
Thank you, it is a joy to share my work here.

I will do my absolute best to get through this. It is experimental, and I am going into it with my eyes wide open. But, you take what changes you need to sometimes. And it will buy me more time, because I am not done yet. Thank you for your words. They mean a lot.

Sorry mate, I self-identify as a Human/Cybrog/Chimaera - or "mostly human." One of the replacement valves is a bit of a pig; the other is metallic (and noisy as hell, you can hear me coming a mile away, lol). The Aortic Root is Dacron, as are all the patches holding my heart together. And I have a few other artificial bits as well, and am about to gain more. So far, no Klingon, Vulcan, Andorian or Organian parts. But I'll have a word with the surgical team. I wonder if they'll give me a choice on the colour of the new parts this time?

More soon.
