Japan hit by 9.0 earthquake.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

I created these images using Google Earth, and the Real-Time Earthquakes layer. Size of the circles indicate magnitude, yellow equals quakes within a week, orange within a day, and red within an hour.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

Is the entire Pacific one major plate? I mean I know the basics of plate tectonics but I'm not really a buff. It looks from those Google Earth images and the boundaries they appear to show, that it is. That's a hell of a lot of momentum that SOB can generate if that's the case, but I guess maybe there are more minor plate movements involved.

Pretty much. It's huge, HUGE plate. Here it is in light yellow:

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

Yeah...the 1700 earthquake was really, really bad.

I'm hoping this doesn't ripple all the way to the New Madrid. Talk about an area totally unprepared to handle an earthquake as strong as what's hit it in the past...

:(

I was thinking about New Madrid, too. If a quake the magnitude of Japan's hit, it would be bye-bye St. Louis, Little Rock, Paducah KY, and there would likely be damage as far away as Chicago. :( Nothing short of catastrophic.

Yeah...some of the suburbs in these areas may have better construction in certain places (some of these communities did at least start to pay attention to seismic bracing and things like that in the early 2000s), but the older construction will be demolished if the New Madrid ever goes off that badly again. I read a very scary book once that described the horror that could take place if ever Memphis and St. Louis had a serious earthquake. It would be absolute, apocalyptic devastation and I am not exaggerating.

There is a nuclear plant near I live. Being a fireman I was given basic Nuclear Emergency Response training and later took more advanced training as it was offered. I am one of 4 people in the tri-county area authorized to enter the containment structure to perform man-down rescues. The plant has it's own team but they have to have a backup team in place... that's us.

On top of that I also took the Media Relations training when it was offered. They trained us to answer any questions that the media might ask and more importantly direct people to sources of information.

Then I have a father and two uncles who have worked in the nuclear industry... and they were Nuclear Navy before that... my mother worked at this plant as Health-Physics lab-worker until she had us kids.

...This kind of stuff is/was topical conversation around our table. I may not be a nuclear-engineer or even work there but I have learned enough over the last decade and a half to help alleviate some of the mystery and fear about these power plants.

Thank you very much for all of this. It's very good to have some word from a professional with some knowledge in this area.

the issue with communication within some part os japan is some cell towers were damaged and everything is jammed.
though messages have better chance of getting through then voice.

This is a very important thing for people to remember in case of a disaster, severe weather, etc.: a text message requires far less bandwidth and is more likely to get through than a voice call. These days, everyone--even those who do not like texting otherwise--should know and be able to text in case of emergency.

Now I am NOT sure of this, but has anyone heard anything about an 8.4 aftershock, or did I mishear something?

allen steele wrote a book part of which was about an earth quake in the new madrid area.

one problem west tn has is the lack of bed rock which one starts to encounter around just west of the tennessee river.

one thing that has been going on is a swarm of small earthquakes around conway ark.
it wasnt on new madrid and there is heavy speculation that fracking a method of searching for natural gas may be a contributing factor.
usgs and university of memphis have been placing extra sensors around the area.

the good news is that they no longer expect another monster earthquake on new madrid for a long time.
but there is a decent chance of a smaller one within fifty for so years.

i forgot the exact numbers but they have been in the usgs fact sheet of the area.

one problem with tracking what is going in with the reactors is there are five ones with concerns and three possibly serious.

i had hoped goji was ok because i knew he was around tokyo and i knew pretty quickly through my tweeter feed it was ok.

as for the message thing..
the first time i became aware you are better off texting then trying to call in a disaster was during katrina.
people who were not able to call where able to text for help.

oh and i still keep hoping against hope a lot of missing are just not found alive yet.
that they scattered to different shelters ect...
they did find five of the missing trains and passengers safe.

And every other major plate is moving towards the Pacific one right? Since the continents are moving away from each other in the Atlantic.

And Japan is right on top of four plates. What direction is the Philippine Plate moving?

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

I wasn't certain, so I had to go find a map that would show it:

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

I was at a new appartment party yesterday and we watched the news part time and for some reason the Godzilla figure on top of a closet seemed a bit.. strange ;)

We were hoping for a "Godzilla sighted!" message in the newsticker but no luck.. :(

Anyway.. i'm glad Goji is ok and everyone else here who has people in Japan or are there personally. It's a great tragedy and i fear the worst is yet to come. I've read that usually the initial earthquake in Japan causes 10% of the destruction but the resulting additional damages by fire, flooding etc causes the 90%.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

We now have video proof that sis is okay! :D Mom, dad and little sis talked to her over Skype. Dad just put up a screen cap from it and she's smiling in it and they obviously have power so that's great. Really relieved right now.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

It's nice to see some intelligent and considered contributions here. Some of the ignorance and even schadenfreude I've seen elsewhere is appalling.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

Now they're saying that we will be having rolling blackouts practically every day from now until April, and there's a high possibility of another "massive" earthquake in the next few days. Joy.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

My neighborhood was scheduled for a turn at a power outage from 6:30 to 10 A.M., but it's been canceled. And, yes, we had several small earthquakes in the past few hours, having had more than 400 aftershocks already.
