CNN had a blurb about a volcano in the southern part of Japan erupting, which is on no way unusual.

I can't remember if they said it did or didn't or couldn't have had anything to do with the earthquake, but who really knows.

I can only imagine a quake that big could have an effect on a very unstable region like that.

As the bombing of Pearl Harbor was 70 years ago, anyone responsible for it was dead long ago and the vast majority of Japanese alive today were not born when Pearl Harbor was attacked.

I bet most of these idiots weren't even alive when Pearl Harobr happened, either.

My parents are panicking about this nuclear power plant thing and want me out of the country NOW. I am scheduled to go home in three weeks and my work contract goes for another two, and it is annoying hearing them talk like I'm going to come home a glowing radioactive mutant unless I'm on a plane tomorrow.

The foreign media isn't helping. They've really put people into a panic.

Wow... that's just... disturbing.

It's tribalism. A knee-jerk reaction that the "other tribe" is always a threat, and so their suffering should be cheered because of it. And this desire to see harm and suffering befall the other tribe is always expressed in terms of what that tribe or its members did in the past. "It's okay for us to torture this man from the other village because his people killed my sister" (despite the fact that they tortured your son because you killed one of their brothers, and so on), or, in more advanced and civilized countries, it's "go, tsunami, go! Wtf should we feel bad for Japan, they bombed Pearl Harbour!" It's not actually about Pearl Harbour at all (how could it be? That has zero relevance here), it's just that if you're inclined to this sort of behaviour you need to justify your desire to see suffering by naming some past offense against you. If you're also an American talking about Japan, then that's "Pearl Harbour"; it's the convenient thing at hand.

Yes, it's an excellent explanation. Unfortunately, many people nowadays seem to have a poor attention span, poor reading comprehension,and believe whatever their intuition or their badly-informed peer group tells them.

The explosions are hydrogen and are radioactive but not nuclear.
