Major quake hits Japan

Tokyo (CNN) -- A major earthquake in Japan early Friday sent people fleeing out of buildings in the capital of Tokyo and triggered tsunami warnings.

Cars toppled off bridges and fell into waters underneath.

The 7.9-magnitude quake was 373 kilometers (231 miles) from Tokyo, the United States Geological Survey said.

It triggered a tsunami warning for various countries, including Japan and Russia, the National Weather Service said.

"Based on all available data a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be destructive on coastal areas even far from the epicenter," forecasters said.

"An investigation is under way to determine if there is a tsunami threat to Hawaii."

A Tsunami has already been reported.

Major quake off Japan, 6m tsunami for Miyagi coast

A major earthquake has struck off Japan, shaking buildings in Tokyo for several minutes and forcing people out of their homes.

Japan issued its most serious tsunami warning, saying a wave as high as 6 metres could strike the coast near Miyagi prefecture, the BBC reports.

Horrible.
Saw a report that predicted 20 foot tsunami.

God help those people.

Watching video of it now, it's not looking good. Apparently the tsunami has hit some areas.

CNN is running a news feed from CNN International.

The video they showed was of a flooded parking lot and bridges.

EDIT: Looks like the video is coming from NHK, a Japanese network.

Ah, got it. Thanks. I think their server is a bit loaded down, as it took a good 5 minutes for the video player to even appear for me.

If you have access to cable TV, they're airing it on the network

Woah, theyre airing a video of the tsunami flooding through farm land. Its one of the most amazingly horrifying thing ive seen. Its like something out of a movie.

Tried getting a hold of sis in Sendai to no avail. Hope she's okay. And Goji for that matter.

Oh my God, you can see cars trying to drive away from the wave! :(
They've also updated the quake from magnitude 8.8 to 8.9.

Another Earthquake magnitude 7.1 just happened off the coast of Honshu.

This is absolutely amazing and horrifying at the same time.
