Contest: ENTER January Art Challenge – “Design Evolution”

MisterD

Commander
Red Shirt
Welcome to the 210th Fan Art Forum challenge! This January the theme is Design Evolution:

"Show us your design evolution process (possibly just quick sketches) for something Star Trek, be it a ship, alien race or piece of equipment."

So the emphasis is on the process and not the final product. Aside from sketches every information on what influenced your design process is welcomed. (I am thinking about star trek lore, or science...basically every aspect of worldbuilding and/or product design.) If there are any questions left, please don't hesitate to ask.

The Rules
  • the artwork you submit should be created during the month of the challenge
  • only one final image can be submitted (although it may contain multiple views)
  • your final entry should be posted in this thread (although dedicated WIP threads are appreciated)
The winner gets to sport the “Art Challenge Winner” banner below their name for the following month and has the honor of hosting February's challenge. Be sure to help decide what the theme for next month's contest will be here.

You have until Monday, January 30st to post your final entry in this thread. If you have any questions or if you need more time, just let us know in this thread. :)

Good luck and have fun! I'm looking forward to your ideas!

IMPORTANT: To be clear on the rules of this challenge. Your submitted piece has to be made during the month of the challenge. Howerver, this does NOT apply for artwork that is includet in the submission itself!

I'm not sure if this fits the bill because there's very little actual evolution in terms of design, as the initial sketch is what I went with as the basis for the final piece? Although, the packaging design shows some change, but I actually did that sketch back in November as part of my design process for the Toy Trek challenge, so I don't think that counts (however, the physical packaging 'frame' is new this month, as is the text). I guess this is more of a journey from the ideas stage to the end result?

If it's not what you're after, I've got something Oberth-y in its very early stages, so I could try and make something of it tomorrow :)

@Michael
Hey, I have a question: The rules for the art challenge say that the art piece has to be made in the month of the challenge.

But in this case it is perfectly fine when I show the design process of an art piece I did months before, because technically the "timeline/documentation" itself is the submission and not the documented art piece. Am I right on this?

@Cyfa, if that isn't a design evolution I don't know what is. Looks very cool. :techman:

@MisterD, yes I agree: In the context of this particular contest it makes total sense to allow the submitted piece to include stuff that has been created before the month of the contest. Personally I'm very open to massaging these rules as much as needed in order to get more people involved.

@Michael
I should have thought of this earlier. I was about to give up on this challenge since January has, like always, been very stressful.

I changed the opening post of the thread. Lets hope its not too late.

I've been working on an entry, but I need a little more time to collate everything into a single image.

An extra couple of days extension should get me over the line, if possible. :)

Having only one entry makes no sense anyway. I am also struggeling to get things done. If everybody is ok with it, I would set FRIDAY, January the 3rd as the new dead line.
