Janeway and cooking...

Because a woman who could cook and thus feed the female sterotype would take away from Janeway's authority somehow.

And at the time, there were whole bunches from the Janeway Brigade applauding that decision. Because, like, it's cool to be a female & not know how to cook.

*rolling eyes*

But she knows how to make fire.

Fire trumps cooking.

Another two months on the planet and every last one of them would have been bald.

Which is odd given that it required her to look incompetent because she could not use a glorified vending machine. I mean this is a device that you could give the most vague description and it would give you what you wanted. yet somehow she manages to burn a pot roast.

Related to this is the recognition that, to date, every trek show (though TOS was more ambiguous) had men do the cooking.

Well, that's an old stereotype... Men are chefs (they go out to work to cook & get paid for it), women are cooks (they stay home & feed the family).

It's so pervasive, though, that I know female pastry chefs who had a hard time getting used to being called "chef." They called themselves "bakers." And these are pastry chefs who are recognized as among the best in the world.

Well the difference betwen chef and cook is negligable in definition, but former seems to have more presitge(and a more masculune overtone) than the latter.

Kinda like a plantation is just a farm, but hey it sounds a lot more nice.

You're right on the stereotypes and that some pastry chefs prefer
being called "baker." I think that "bakers" are actually more specialized chefs, so they should want the recognition of achievement in their specialized field. On the various tv cooking shows, many of the chefs, for all their ability, are damn afraid to bake, while the bakers are willing and able to cook at the same high level as the chefs.

Go bakers!

I'm watching Warehouse 13 right now and Jeri Ryan popped up who I had completely forgotten about, but she plays the dughter-inlaw of a character played by Kate Mulgrew and I'm trying to remember if there's (I've watched 2 and a half seaosns in the last two days) any or much reference about Mama Latimer's cookerying skills...

Something about "Cookies" perhaps?

On the next Warehouse 13, then a quick shot Kate and Jeri, a platter of cookies, and a pitcher of gin rickies in front of a fireplace.

I particularly like the formal placing of their hands.. so self conscious as to keeping them from straying.

It is a wonderful J7 scene, but given Seven's awareness of Chakotay's spiritual leanings and his support of Seven's view during the episode, I thought the scene would have made more sense with him. Especially, when Janeway's character was shown to not be so spiritually inclined in a previous episode.

Haven't you ever had a deep spiritual chat with someone you attracted to? Because it's very meaningful to them so you try real hard to make it meaningful to you too..
