James Cawley cast in Trek XI

This is the classic example of having someone inside the tent pissing out instead of outside the tent pissing in.

Can you say, "Co-opted?" I know you can.

That presupposes that Cawley has some influential standing in fandom deserving of co-option, as opposed to him just being a nut.

Even so, he's spent tens of thousands of unrecoverable hard-earned dollars on a series of fan films. If that's the sort of dues-paying required to get Abrams' attention, I'm just happy to be a spectator...

I really don't understand the hatred toward James here. I've never heard one negative anecdote about the guy (and if he were a jerk like, say, William Shatner, then word would have spread pretty quickly) and all he's known for is spending tons of his own money to give the fans a Star Trek production to enjoy at a time when The Powers That Be were basically ignoring us.

I'm happy for him and I'm glad he likes the direction the new film is going.

It's hard to accuse the guy of being a sellout when he still says "It's not what I would've done". He's being a mature adult human being and not some whiny little fanboy going off on something because it doesn't match up with what he wants.

Big respect to James for what he's done with New Voyages

Big respect to JJ for what I've heard and seen about ST:XI

That they're working together in any way can only be good.

This might be a suck-up post, but these two guys are the ones at the coal face keeping trek alive today, and for that I've got...well...big respect.

Amen. The guy's pretty much the ultimate fan. He had to fight (however briefly) with Paramount to put out the episodes he's managed to do and spent a bunch of money in the process. I don't begrudge him one frame of celluloid he'll take up in this movie. He's earned it.

Yeah, there will be those to say Abrams 'planted' him among us to sow good intent. But you know what? Abrams doesn't need our asses. Anyone who knows who James Cawley is is insignificant in both tickets purchased and credibility generated.

Abrams did it because he's a nice guy who's paying attention to fandom and was trying to throw James and James's fans a bone.

The suggestion that there's some kind of Machiavellian ulterior motive to this is just messed up.

I just want to chime in with my congrats--and tremendous envy--for Mr. Cawley.

He seems like a nice guy and I've enjoyed the occasional NV episode.

Go in not expecting Olivier, and you find yourself actually enjoying the ride.

\S/

Cawley is pretty good in NV, doubt he will be doing much acting though...hes the only reason I want to watch the rest OGAM now (just on the offchance that he pops up again) as I actually thought he was the best actor in the film (which is odd seeming the others are supposedly real actors where as he is amature)

I think it's great he;s there as a sort Ambassador for the fans. I do think his acting suks, but I give him respect for his respect of Trek so big ups to James

WTF? Who is Abrams going to cast next, my mom?
Dunno. Has she booked plane tickets to LA lately? ;)

My predicition is that The Trek Life's Dave Reddick will get an extra role too. It feels inevitable somehow... Carl, in full Andorian make-up... coming to a cinema near you.

Anyone whose made negative comments about James Cawley's acting ability should take the time to download 'World Enough and Time'. Then judge him after that. While some of the supporting cast is a lower standard, I thought Cawley's performance was very good. Occasionally, his delivery of lines even gave me the chills - the way good Star Trek can. And the story and production values are amazing for a free fan-produced episode.

I hope he is a background character they kill off quickly. Frankly im sick of hearing about this hack.

Oh shuddup. You visit a thread specifically about James Cawley and then say you're sick of hearing about him and call him names?

Exactly....and since James is a member here, insults aimed at members are subject to warnings/bans...

I've got nothing but the highest regards for James and his work of love.

That, and envy. Definitely a lot of envy. I'm not in the new Star Trek movie. :(

Amen. It's an embarrassing fact of fandom that we've got plenty of those, and not just in Star Trek fandom.

Good lord...

:brickwall:
