James Cawley cast in Trek XI

Sudden freeze frame, then flashing arrows all around Cawley's face and the caption James "New Voyages" Cawley at the bottom of the screen.

I say make him a redshirt, kill him off in the traditional style, be done with it.

He'll have no action role, but having him die in a scene would piss fans off because they would see it as a symbolic death of original Trek.

Well, it might be the symbolic death of purist Trek, that streak of fandom which emphasize fidelity to TOS of which Cawley is a prominent member.

But the guy representing the old show in this movie isn't Cawley, it's Nimoy.

It's not half bad. It's a faithful recast and continuation of TOS with new stories, and it's featured performances by Takei and Koenig. You could do worse than give it a look.

Good for James! I'm sure that he'll do just fine, and have a wonderful time in the process.

The interview with him over at www.trekmovie.com is well worth checking out. I'm more and more intrigued by what's been suggested about the sets.

This is the classic example of having someone inside the tent pissing out instead of outside the tent pissing in.

Can you say, "Co-opted?" I know you can.

Nope, never hear of him.

Never seen "New Voyages" either.

Me either.

Which is actually oddly refreshing.

It always makes me happy when I discover that I'm not quite as much of a geek as I thought I was.

That's really cool, hopefully this'll help his career. Isn't he a professional 'Elvis' impersonator too?

I like his take on Kirk, definatly not simply impersonating Shatner, I like Shatners Kirk but I thought Cawley's was more subdued maybe a bit more professional (funny to say since Shatner was way more experienced when he did the character).

Cheers!

People cut him some slack will ya! It's a great thing for him to get to be at ground zero of the reinventing of the franchise. He seems to be a very very nice guy, a great Trek fan who has devoted tens of thousands of dollars into making Trek shows for himself and US!

I got to visit the set of Voyager on my business trip to the lot, and the post production offices of Insurrection and I was still able to be critical of both productions. This is the DREAM OF A LIFETIME for him and many Trek fans, so stop winging about his acting ability and be happy for a fellow trek fan!

Yes, James would do an Elvis act in Vegas for about 6-7 months a year, the money he made from that he used alot for NV.

Lol, you're a Mod on a TrekBBS, your geek goddess status is in no jeopardy :)

I'm quite happy for him! He's living every fan's dream and while I didn't think I could get any more excited about this movie, his enthusiasm, especially the comments about the costumes, has really made me even more optimistic about the movie's potential.

Absolutely Right(TM).

I have no doubt that positive fan PR played into the filmmakers' decision to bring Cawley into the film, and the possibility of neutralizing a vocal critic in the fan community surely entered their minds. I do think that Cawley's reactions have, while certainly positive, not sounded like he's abandoning his opinions -- he still points out that a lot of things are not the way he would have done them.

I say, good for him. Sounds like loads of fun.

A big Mazel Tov to James! I enjoyed listening to that interview with him about his experience. Despite the project not being done as he would have done it, he seems very enthusiastic about Abrams' vision for Trek. As he says, different doesn't mean "wrong."

And I find it sad that some can't accept his positive comments about what he saw on-set without making him out to be a brainwashed, co-opted sellout. He seems to have a very mature view about the whole thing. Which is more than I can say for some other Trek fans I've seen.

Agreed. Where Cawley is concerned, I think some people are just pissed off that he has an Enterprise bridge to play with and they DON'T. It's not like he changed his mind and said "Everything JJ does is perfectly GOLD! He said some things were not what he would have done. That's it.

I just started watching TMP again and I can't imagine what it was like when people saw R. Wise's version. Did people just say, "Sure. I can tell this is only 2 1/2 years removed from there series". C'mon. The new "look" was accepted and not explained away as yet another parallel universe.
