James Cawley cast in Trek XI

I hope he is a background character they kill off quickly. Frankly im sick of hearing about this hack.

Oh shuddup. You visit a thread specifically about James Cawley and then say you're sick of hearing about him and call him names?

OK-that's just unnecessary. James seems to be a good guy, loves Trek, loves acting, and is involved in a project others seem to enjoy. You are, of course entitled to your opinion, but expressing it in this way is rude. Please don't be. (I know, not my place, I'm just tired of rude people today.)

Yeeahhhh....I know it's something of a Trek tradition to have fan cameos, but first that professor, not Cawley...I hope that's IT, because more of this kind of thing diminishes things a bit.

I don't understand how exactly, its not like they're going to halt the movie and have someone say: "Hey this is a fan doing a cameo" - the only people its likely to bug are ironically fans themselves, be completely invisible to newbies that's for sure.

Now if they actually halted the film to point out the cameo speaking or otherwise then it might be a problem... but the likelyhood of that taking place is really small.

If he has a speaking role the movie is sunk.

Steady on mate, way to go crucifying someone who has undoubtedly contributed to the star trek universe and industry. So he's no william shatner, but he's the best we've got just now.

Sudden freeze frame, then flashing arrows all around Cawley's face and the caption James "New Voyages" Cawley at the bottom of the screen.

I say make him a redshirt, kill him off in the traditional style, be done with it.

I saw the video- good for James!! I am glad to see that a "purist" is okay with the way the movie is going. I'm getting more and more excited about Trek XI!

I like him being in the film. A nice gesture of Abrams. And I like what Cawley has to say about the uniforms, sets and acting abilities. I have the feeling that this movie will be great.

How so? 99.9% of the people who see this film will never have seen Mr. Cawley before or have any idea who he is.

Having just watched the whole video, I gotta give it up to Cawley for being rather forthright and cogent. Good for him.

I still think he's a crappy actor, but at least he cops to it :)

Wow... now they've really gone and ramped up the fan jealousy factor. He gets to see the redesigned NCC-1701 before anyone else, goes online and says it's not enough like the original... so ends up rewarded with a part in the film? Am I reading too much into this?

Listen, Cawley is a fan, just like the rest of us. For that, all the best to him and break a leg!

As for his opinion, it's one guy's opinion. We'll all get to make a judgment soon enough.

I enjoy the New Voyages. I don't think they're great if they were professional pieces of entertainment. But as free, non profit, fan movies, they are extraordinary.

However, that's the key to why Cawley's opinion differs from the team behind the new movie. Because Cawley is a fan, his goal is in recreating what already exists. Abram's goal is in creating some new.

The fact that a passionate, motivated fan can see eye to eye with the creator of 'NuTrek', bodes REALLY well.

I'm happy for James, It's hard to believe, I remember 3 years ago we were all at diner in with Rod (Roddenberry), and the NV crew. James told us the story about how he met William Shater, somebody had said Kirk is here and Shatner thought they were talking about him when they were refering to James, I guess Shat got slightly bewildered then amused by this and they all had a good laugh. That was a fun night reminising and pondering about what lyes ahead for Star Trek (Enterprise had just been canceled) and the things we were involved in at the time.

I concider James to be a super-fan of Trek, never have i seen someone put in so much or his time and thousands and thousands of dollars towards doing something he loves with little to no monatary reward.

Even if it a very minor background cameo, he is there, and a part of it and that is very cool indeed!

Maybe James appears as Old Bold Stone Cold Kirk tm.

Will Matt Jefferies endorse the movie?

I should really clarify, my previous post was missing one of these... :p.

New Voyages is a great acheivement, which continues to entertain millions of fans through free downloads. It may well have been instrumental in the franchise shifting it's focus back to TOS.

Of course, he deserves this. Enjoy your tour of duty aboard Pike's Enterprise, James!

I'm sure he'd be supportive of Star Trek's revival... if he were still with us.

Holytomato said: When? :(
I don't recall the year (and I should really). There was an unseen character named after him on Enterprise in 2003. "First Flight", when Trip is reassigned from Captain Jefferies' engineering team. I did wonder if it was around that time.

Great Interview.

Stop ragging on the guy, he's a fan. Same as us.

Such a positive interview and yet some people are determined to try and drag the thing down.

Good on you, James.
