I've Given Up...

This thread is getting entirely too serious.

Carry on.

:guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw:

What is that from? The recent Confidential?

Well firstly, the wink smiley is rarely put to any use other than the acceptable face of forum condescension.

Except when it's not?
Mmmhmm, but then it was. Hence my saying.
Secondly, if I came up with a simile to the effect of you're a daft twat who should be ignored, you'd be offended.
Bones, that's all you EVER say to anyone around here. Their opinion is unimportant, yours is paramount. You have full volume opinion privileges, everyone else is attacking you if they do the same. Case in point, please see your response at the bottom.
No, people are attacking me if they resort to labelling and name calling rather than arguing the points at hand. It's not a difficult distinction really. Worth learning.
I don't know what "ming-mongs" are. Some baby talk for "whiny twat", I imagine. And, in that case, yes. I think it's perfectly fine, but then I don't live in your overly-sensitive drama-queen universe.
"Ming-mong" is usually taken to be a derogatory term for someone with Down's syndrome. If you don't know the instance to which I'm referring, it's when RTD once called all his critics in fandom that term. I was reminded of it with your Asperger's jibe. I don't think it's appropriate to joke about disability in that way.
You're always looking for an argument, Bones, otherwise you wouldn't just blast every little thing as negatively as possible, in the middle of threads where people are having a nice, positive discussion. You interject bitter negativity in every thread, condescend anyone who thinks otherwise, and then act surprised and offended when someone says something back to you with equal negativity...
Yawn.

Thanks for proving my point. I'll get started on the "daft twat who should be ignored" smiley, but I'm not certain I can get your avatar that tiny.....
The accusations that because I state a point of view that often differs from yours or perhaps the majority (the majority here at least) means I'm negative, bitter, and looking for an argument for its own sake is not only untrue and a cheap attempt to dismiss any point I might make out of hand, but also tiresome. As I have to point out worryingly often these days, if you prefer name calling to a reasoned debate about the show, then it reflects worse on you.

You're right, those accusations are out of hand. Your negativity and your bitterness have nothing to do with your opinions.

Yup I've noticed this, Bones turns up, thoughts oodles of negativity around then, if someone dares to call him on it immediately gets very defensive.

I'm not calling Bones childish, but there is something childish about the attitude at times.

Maybe he's really Squire Trelayne

Sorry, but I have to disagree. The pattern tends to be Bones turns up and throws lots of negativity around about an episode, then a few folks disagree with one or two throwing in personal digs that Bones takes ... personally.

Things around here would progress a lot more smoothly if Bones would just blow off the personal digs, but then it'd also go better if they weren't there in the first place.

Generally, Bones is infuriatingly harsh on episodes the rest of us love, but he/she is really good at digging out plot holes and inconsistencies. Bones and I have a bit of a running disagreement regarding the sonic screwdriver, but I've avoided calling him/her a mule-headed kill-joy. Aside from pointing out what a delightful spirit of good-will I am, I also use this as an example of a tolerant and open-minded approach to dealing with Bones' contributions.

I have to agree with your disagreement.

I just find it so weird how a person can be so negative about it no matter what positives they may pick out of it and watch it week in week out. If I found as many flaws as Bones does with Doctor Who since its return in 2005 with any sort of show I would simply stop watching it. Its not just Bones there do seem to be people on this forum and all over the internet who really dislike the majorty of what they see and carry on watching, I find it simply baffling.

I don't find it baffling. In fact, I find it quite normal to notice flaws and discuss them. My friends and I do it with each DW episode, picking out the good and the bad.

If Bones limited his criticisms to simple "Oh, I thought that bit was daft", people wouldn't be kicking up a fuss. Since he details them, in what I personally find to be a sarcastically humourous manner, people react more.

^ Theres a difference to noticing flaws and giving out low grades consistently to episodes more so than any positive reaction, Most people would stop watching any show if they felt like that ? right...

For example I didn't like Caprica so I stopped, I didn't like a lot of Heroes season 3 and early 4 so I stopped.

Yes and no.

Let me give an example other than TV. I'm a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs (poor me). They've largely been horrid for most of the past 40 years, with only a few decent seasons. I'm extremely critical of the management, the coaching, etc, but I still watch. I still hope for something better.

With DW, it's the same. Some stories are great, some are appallingly bad and some are just average. The appalling ones don't prevent me from continuing to watch. The great ones don't make me forget the utter garbage.

There's no set rule to being a fan of something. Each person has their own tastes and their own manner of expression.

^ Sport and TV are two totally different things, you can't compare the two IMO but my point again are the people who hate the "majorty" of what they see from Who and still watch.

Excellent example, Josan!

Doctor Who is just plain goofy with rubber science stretched to the breaking point, convenient characterization, coincidence-driven plots, and lots of choir accompaniment to spectacularly over-the-top resolutions.

Somehow, we all keep loving the show anyway, largely -- I think -- because of the spirit of the show. It's the most upbeat, positive science fiction ever produced, even if it is a bit on the manic side. On top of that, Davies and Moffat have made the Doctor big -- a mythological hero and the stuff of legends, a fresh ingredient that makes the show even more enjoyable.

Bones gives voice to the niggling doubts I dismiss with every episode and details them in excruciating accuracy. I roll my eyes a lot too, but choose to argue with Bones on the content of the posts, rather than the nature of his/her character. If we drive Bones out of every discussion about Doctor Who, all we'll succeed in creating is a trite little feel-good forum achieved with nothing more than playground politics. And I hate trite little feel-good forum-like things. I'll have to step up and give voice to those same doubts.

And you don't want that to happen.

Ming Mong is actually a reference to a Victoria Wood Doctor Who sketch Terror of the Ming Mongs

The problem is you seem to have confused your opinion as actual fact, and the broad tone of what you post is overwhelmingly negative.

I've pretty much given up on commented on Bones posts, as all it usually gains me is a "What, I'm not allowed to disagree?" in reply.

Personally, I've always been of the 'If you hate it, just sigh, roll your eyes and get on with life' school. Maybe I'm on the wrong internet.

You're completely wrong. The pull of this board is it lets people to moan about shows they hate. The function of the Knights of the TrekBBs Temple is to fight them to the last man.
