It's official: Thank God for Remastered!

A lot of things today are done because "wow that would be cool!". Whenever I hear a producer talk about things that they've done they think "is really cool", I throw up a little.

Oh yeah, I agree on that one. Also the 'star build-up' in Naked Time when the time warp occurs and they're going backwards. It looks crappy in the new version.
I just watched that one and I totally agree. The new effect was too sharp, too digital-looking, more like a screen saver, with no emotional impact.

The original effect had a warm glow to it that seemed to increase... why redo it at all if it couldn't be done at least as well?
I know... HD blah blah.:vulcan:

I don't know if this is what Destructor means, but for MY part, I had to kind of imagine what I WASN'T seeing...

Yes, basically this. The bit where Spock 'signals' to the Enterprise by leaving a plasma trail across the planet was more something that was implied than actually shown in the original broadcast. When I first saw it, well, sure, I understood the basics of what was happening, but it seemed more like treksposition than an actual clever idea. The new effects made things much clearer, there was a direct continuity between Spock's action and Kirk's reaction. I think the story is not being 'held back' by the lack of money they previously were constrained by, if that makes sense.

Unlike the new effects (which I do think are good, just out of place), the re-done theme just sounds terrible.
I think the redone theme sounds pretty good. The new FX are sort of hit or miss for me. Most of the E flyby and orbit shots are pretty good, but a lot of the episode specific shots are really terrible. In Galileo 7, I think the old shot of the shuttle in the shuttlebay is far far superior to the new shot, which looks like a videogame. If they just replaced the shakey starfield, the shot would have been just fine.

Honestly, the MUSIC sounds identical to me, it's the tail end of the new singer's highest note that sort of makes me wince.:alienblush:
Yeah, for some reason it sounds pretty close to me, too, until the very end. Even the first season theme without the vocals loses it at the end for the final note. Why, I'm not sure. It's clearly the same notes.

The low level of Kirk's voice is just the mix. A lot of things are lower or higher in the mix when you take a mono track and make it stereo. Some moments it sounds absurd, like when Sulu swings his foil and an absurdly loud "SWOOOOOSH" sound drows out everything else.

I had only seen stills and a couple short bits years ago. I was judging the new fx from stills mainly, and thought they looked very cartoonish.

I finally got youtube (my computer was too slow) and have watched fx compilations and the Doomsday Machine, hoping the fx would look better. And . . .

HOLY COW, the new fx are cartoonish!! Plus, they change how the Enterprise "flies": she's swooping and darting. Now she's a fighter rather than a cruiser?

Wow.

Well, if you like them, like them. But, "It's official, thank God for remastered"? Thank god there are the original formats still available.

Not my first choice of how depict that, no. But overall, the episode is VASTLY improved IMO.

Still, glad both versions are available!:techman:

"Remastered" refers to the new transfer and has nothing to do with the new FX. The new FX is the only part of the show that isn't remastered, so yes... thank God for Star Trek remastered.

Either way, the remastered episodes and the new FX have enabled me to rediscover the series, with the added bonus of having something new to enjoy. The original mono mix and effects are still available, so it's a win-win.

I find that watching the version with the new effects, is most enjoyable when couple with the mono sound. Then I don't have to worry about the awful theme rerecordin, and the various music screw ups throughout the series. I really don't need the 60's Enterprise swooshing from one end of the room to the other. I prefer to hear the dialog without worrying about the overly loud new sound effects following.

Question: has there ever been a "Mastered" version available?
Yeah.. from 1966-1969.
Cheeky monkey.
Actually when you think about it, the series never had a proper "mastering." On it's original run, some saw 35mm prints in broadcast, while other markets got a 16mm print, some even in B&W. This went on though syndication in the early 70s as well. It wasn't until things got tranferred to video that the show got a proper "mastering." Then with each improvement in broadcast technology, the show got tweeked to look better in the current medium. This latest HD release is no exception.

I was at a Trek Convention (I think it was '76) where Gene Roddenberry brought the bloopers and showed them to us, in 16mm, I believe (I tricked my parents- they thought I went to a local movie, not NYC, heh heh). And the crowd went wild.:techman:

The blooper reels are a longtime fave!! I wish I had gotten to meet GR, though I have gotten to chat with Majel on many occasions at conventions. She really loved the fans and was so supportive of each incarnation of Star Trek.

I wish I had gotten to meet GR,
I didn't get to *meet* him, but I WAS sitting close enough to him to see him REAL good. And when he talked to the crowd or answered questions, you felt like he was talking right to YOU!!
I remember someone asking him if he was okay with making women sex-objects in the show, to which he responded "Sure. I've been lucky enough to have been one myself at times- quite enjoyable. By the way, Bill Shatner had his shirt off a lot...":guffaw:

On topic: I think Gene would have mostly loved the new FX.:techman:

Bob Justman was certainly a fan of the new FX.
