It's New To Me!

I have always been a TNG fan. I grew up on it. I was less of a fan of TOS, but I appreciate it's relevance. I've never been able to get into DS9 though. I tried when it came out, but it just put me to sleep. I gave up on it quickly.

In 1995 or whatever, I remember coming across DS9 on a Saturday night, just randomly flipping through channels. I ended up watching the entire episode "The Visitor". Wonderful episode. However, unable to watch back episodes, and unwilling to jump into the middle of a series, I continued to ignore DS9.

Now, having recently gone through the entire Enterprise series with the help of NetFlix, I've decided to go back and see if I made a mistake passing up on DS9 as well. Last month I got Emissary in the mail. So, if only for my own amusement, I think I'd like to chronicle my viewing of DS9 through virgin eyes.

I've already finished season 1. Honestly, the show was just as dull as I remember it being. However, I've pledged to give it a chance and see it through and sure enough, after a dreadful Luxwana Troi sighting, we get to some good stuff. I commented to my wife that the last three episodes of the season are the first that have really gotten my attention. Especially "Duet" and "In the Hands of the Prophets". Amazing how these episodes are still so timely today, 14 years later.

Anyway, the last two episodes of the season have given me hope. Sorry for the rambling.

If it's so onerous, why are you bothering? Seriously. There's so much other good tv out there you could be enjoying.

Season 1 is by far the worst season of DS9. Although, I don't see how even Season 1 of DS9 is any more dull than any season of TNG is. To me it seems the dullness of Season 1 of DS9 is exactly on par with the dullness of any season of TNG.

In any case if you stick with DS9 I'm confident you will come to find there is a very good reason why among hardcore Trek fans on this site and others, DS9 alway comes out on top. It's because DS9 truly is the best. :D

DS9 gets a lot better from Season 2 and on.

DS9 also has plenty more timely episodes coming up for you, even moreso than the ones you mentioned.

That said, there are about 5 or six dud episodes per season of DS9. But they are easy enough to skip once you've seen the series once, and well-worth putting up with one-time for the 20 or so other great episodes per season (not including Season 1 which had 3 or 4 great episodes only).

When I was younger, I too thought DS9 was boring. I decided to start from scratch again a few years back and while I liked season one (a WAY better first season than TNG's effort), the price of the DVD sets held me back.

I think you should really give season two a chance Chris - it's a great, great season and really hooked me into DS9 to the point that I was no longer looking back, but very much looking forward to what was to come.

I'll be interested to hear what you think.

Hey man, it's Star Trek. I'll stick it out.

I have every intention of pushing through the occasional dud to get to what I understand is good Trek. I sat through a few stinkers in the first couple seasons of the Enterprise, after all, and it was well worth it.

As far as TNG goes, I think most shows are pretty weak in their first season or two. It takes a bit to really round out the characters. That's another reason I'm willing to work my way through the first season of DS9 this time as well.

I'd just jump ahead to the Jem'Hadar and begin from there. DS9 was a mixed bag until then, but after that-it rocked.

I still love the Circle trilogy. And there are other good episodes between that and the season finale.

Season 2 starts off good and gets bad in the middle but the final third of the season is pretty darn good.
