It's actually astonishing that the Jabba/Leia scenes in ROTJ didn't cause a scandal, back in 1983

To me..
It's the shift to do something before there's a potential or likely a nonexistant problem.

Make a main female character as drab as possible so not to offend Twitter mob, or whomever would be offended by a sexy girl or guy. But be proactive before anybody says a thing. And take it to a degree that is way to far.

As said.. A sexy game character, have there costume modified to not offend the "westren" audience. They don't want to be pinged by some Twitter karen .. So they change it.
It's not about making them "as drab as possible" it's just about avoiding the ridiculous, sexist, overly revealing costumes that a lot of those kind of games have.
Some people are just getting tired of the women constantly running around 9/10 naked, while the men are also fully clothed. There is nothing wrong with showing some skin, but some of those games take it to a ridiculous extreme.

They do but my example takes a fully clothed woman with a bit of cleavage, Some skin and covers it all for no reason.. Er go.. To far

What kind of game was it? If it's supposed to be a kids' game, then they're probably going to be a bit more cautious when it comes to that kind of thing.

Exactly. It's tiresome to be accused of puritanical attitudes when I'm wanting it to be more level. Same job, same gear.

Because people were weren't offended by the mere showing a cute woman in anything other than a Burka back then..

True.

And by the amount of women that cosplay slave Leia

...and as someone who attended conventions of that era, I remember seeing a good number of cosplayers dressed as slave Leia, and there was no controversy or offense at all. The "offense" sprang up (like something from a political think-tank) in this century, where every frame of the OT was over-analyzed for all of the wrong reasons.
