I don't really get the claim that the big problem with Season 1 or Seasons 1 & 2 is that they're preachy at least too un-subtly; the rest of TNG, most of Trek, most of television is also pretty preachy and un-subtly so at that.
I do think a particular difference and weakness of Season 1 is that the characterizations Data, Troi and Wesley, and I can see some thinking Riker also, were all overdone and too often annoying, then they were all toned down in Season 2 and then further toned down in Season 3 which were improvements.
