Spoilers, obviously. I apologize about the potentially confusing title, I couldn't think of a better way to phrase it.

I've only seen the movie once just now, so maybe I'm crazy. It felt like the little slave boy at the end moved the broom to him with his mind. Is that my imagination?

That's why, when I'd read the movie spoilers before seeing the movie,

and getting disappointed because the spoilers didn't spoil as much of the movie because I was seeing the events unfold somewhat differently than what was "spoiled" so despite being "big" spoilers they weren't, I was hoping they'd do more with the "Show me my place in all this" and Ren reaching out to her. I still think it would be cool if Ren won Rey over (the opposite of Luke winning back BBQ'ed Anakin in ROTJ) and the new kid with the broom being the next possible means to overcome the deadly duo of Rey and Ren. Modern audiences wouldn't accept it, though if the media is correct they're allegedly not fond of TLJ as it stands. It needn't be a fake-out, while Rey was still disgusted she can still be persuaded. That would really make the Resistance Rebels get queasy. It's not going to happen but I still like to think about it.

Watching Rogue One and appreciating Chirrut's use of the force, which is depressingly weak for Darth Vader's appearance, but still pleasing enough to watch and makes him kick ass. So I realised something – a joke moment in The Force Awakens basically establishes Han Solo as force sensitive.

So yeah, everyone has it to some degree. Then again, that boy in TLJ did way more without any training than Chirrut did with years and years of dedication. That to me means more than just a glimmer of hope. I'm not saying that the boy will necessarily appear as a character in IX or the next trilogy, but the hint suggested that boy would have a role to play. He's simultaneously sympathetic to the resistance, and unusually force sensitive. It's the start of something. At the very least, he won't be in that stable for long.

On a related note, I'm reminded how disappointed I was when it turned out Finn isn't force sensitive. (at least not enough to be a potential Jedi). The idea of him as the symbol of light and good and Ren as the ultimate rejection of the same with Rey being the strongest of the three (that effectively will decide which side comes out on top) sounded like a great premise for the trilogy.

It was mentioned in the 'Ahsoka' novel that it's common for very young force sensitives to manifest their abilities with one particular, very specific trait. Like a natural talent, almost. For Anakin and Luke (presumably) it manifested as the split-second precognition enhanced reflexes that lent to their piloting skills. For Ahsoka herself it was a natural predilection for seeing the truth or falseness in people. A truthsense, of sorts (it's implied Yoda has the same predilection, which make's Palaptine's feat of deception all the more impressive.) For a small girl that appears in that book, it was subtle, almost unconscious telekinisis, just like the boy in TLJ.

As for the boy himself, I doubt he's meant to be a major new character (at least, not yet) just a symbol for the future. The legacy of both the Rebellion and the Jedi in general and Luke Skywalker in particular.


Oh and since someone mentioned Chirrut: it's worth remembering that even at the height of the order there were only 10,000 Jedi. That's 10,000 people born in the Republic (most, presumably within the last century) that had a force potential considered worthy of Jedi training.
Now that figure may be a bit higher since it's unclear if it includes all of the younglings & padawans. Plus we don't know what the washout rate is, nor how often the offer of training is refused outright and of course there's thousands of worlds in the outer rim and elsewhere where the Jedi didn't routinely go looking for candidates.
Still, even if the figure is off by a factor of ten of a hundred that's still a tiny percentage of a population that has to be in the quintillions at the very least, the lion's share of which would be in Republic space.
So Chirrut is most likely just an otherwise ordinary person with no exceptional force ability, but still possessing the same connection that all living things have. He has probably spent his whole life meditating and training to get to the point where he can sense and use the force more ably than most, but still nowhere near the sheer power potential of a Jedi.

I think the novelization mentions somwhere that both he and Baze had spent their whole lives on Jedah, so either of them being Padawan washouts seems unlikely.

I'm just going to stick with the idea that everyone has the capacity for at least some ability to sense or even use the force. It's just that for 99.999999999999% of the population, it takes a lifetime of discipline, meditation and great effort to do what comes perfectly naturally to a Jedi youngling candidate with an above average M-count.

I'm still not entirely sure if the midichlorians are the direct and sole cause of above average force ability, or if their increased presence is a result of a "luminous being" that for whatever reason happens to shine more brightly in the force than others. Sort of like how the kybers seem to "sing" to force users, but they're mostly probably just resonating off of them. Given that midichlorians are a biologically hereditary trait it may be a bit of both.

And at the end of the film, the friend has become a believer again, after seeing a miracle, and maybe to honor his friend.

They weren't just people who guarded a temple. The "Guardians of the Whills" is a religious order in it's own right just like the Jedi Order and supposedly, at least as old. They were essentially warrior monks who "worship" the force and protect the Kyber Temple.

The Jedi religion doesn't exist in a vacuum. There's loads of other belief systems, some like the "Disciples of the Whills" and the "Guardians of the Whills" appear to have some common relationship to the Jedi doctrine, indicating perhaps a common history. Religions schism all the time after all. Hell, technically even the Sith are supposedly a rogue faction of Jedi that broke away thousands of years back.

And yes, Chirrut was still a very firm believer in the force while Baze had lost his faith. Not in whether or nor the force exists of course, but in what you might characterise as the benevolent will of the force. Again, you don't need to be a Jedi or have an innate ability to feel the force. Literally any living thing can do it if they open themselves to it.
