Is there a lot of inbreeding in the Soong family line?

It's a common TV trope to use the same actor to portray a character's ancestors, or even a parent. It's just writ large with the Soong family. Hell, at this point, it's basically identical to A Fistful of Datas to the extent I wouldn't be surprised if they did indeed cast Spiner to play a female Soong.

Still wondering if Riker's (great)²² grandson (who happens to look a lot like him) is going to turn up on Discovery at some point. Jonathan Frakes has been pretty much everywhere else.
I'm still waiting for the actual Riker to appear in a season finale with a state of the art starship to save the day somehow.

A new Pic season 2 character

This is most likely just an unshaved Altan, though I've heard a theory that it's Arik due to the apparent time travel/corrupted future shenanigans going on in season two. Somehow I don't think they'll be introducing us to yet another member of the Soong clan.

Brent Spiner has confirmed he is playing a new Soong in season 2.

I've heard the fan theory that they're actually clones. Arik was into the illegal genetic tampering, after all.

I never got the 'clone' vibe.

The Soongs that Brent has played so far, were all unique individuals who definitely did not seem like clones of each other. I'm sure this latest Soong will be just another example of that.

That said, I'm suspecting that Billy-Bob (the Soong from S2, and I should know, because I just now made it up) will be the reason for the timeline divergence...

Kate Mulgrew played an ancestor who looked just like her.

Jolene Blalock played an ancestor who looked just like her.

There were portraits of Jean-Luc Picard's ancestors who looked just like Patrick Stewart.

It's just a TV thing. There's nothing more to it than that.

Although I do like the theory that they're all clones.

That's my working theory for the identical nurses and policewomen on "Pokémon". There's a secret cloning lab in the basement of Sylph headquarters in Saffron City, spitting out a bottomless supply of Joy's and Jenny's.

If they are clones then Arik was probably the original, as he was the one who was into the genetic augmentation stuff. So he could have set up a line of clones to follow him, with various modifications built in. Plus, the environments that they grew up in would account for differences in personality and temperament. Nature vs. nurture, or whatever.

But I agree that they aren't intended to be clones. It's just a TV storytelling convention to have ancestors and descendants played by the same actor. Such as Marty McFly's future son and daughter both being played by Michael J. Fox.
