Is Star Trek: Picard lasting 7 seasons a possibility?

Honestly I'm not entirely persuaded that they should even be doing seasons two and three. I consider Season One so wonderful that, while I'm excited to see S2-3, it would have been really great to just go out with S1 and let "Et in Arcadia Ego, Part II" be the last we saw of Jean-Luc and his ersatz family.

To be totally fair, I once thought that of continuing TNG at all. In November 2015, when they announced there was going to be a new Star Trek series, I figured it would pick up after the events Spock described in the 2009 Film. So I thought there was a story there, I just didn't think it was going to be with Picard. When PIC was finally announced, I went along with it because I thought to myself, "Even though I'm not really a TNGer, I still think it deserves better than to go out with Nemesis, so let's see what they can do." Then I saw the trailer in July 2019 and I was hooked. And when I saw the first season, it really drove home just how effectively they pulled a rabbit out of the hat. To the point where, as much as I like DSC, I thought PIC Season 1 was better.

So I'm convinced they'll pull a rabbit out of their hat again with Seasons 2 and 3.

I thought the plan was only for three seasons anyway?

"We have discussed it as both a 3 season show, a 5 season show, a ‘let’s just keep going forever’ show… Star Trek: Picard in my view will go as long as Patrick Stewart wants to do it…"

Hardy does TV. He was in Peaky Blinders

A lot of movie people are doing TV now (Kevin Costner is doing Yellowstone.)

I would like to see a series pick up after Picard in the 25th century with some fresh faces and an honest attempt at world building again. I have no appetite for anymore of the 32nd century after Disco.

Anything beyond the 32nd century would reek of a bad 70's sci-fi film ("Star Trek: Adventures in the Year 40,000!" )

That's because we're in a new era where streaming services -- specifically the Amazon and Netflix -- and the $$ pumped into productions have blurred the distinction between TV and movies (helped a bit -- or a lot -- by the pandemic). Consider it the new norm.

Why would Picard need to be recast? It just means that PIC has to take on a new identity i.e. renaming La Sirena to Picard, or the crew trying to live up to the ideals and legacy of Picard.

For all we know, Picard becomes the voice for the ship computer on the Ent-F and a few lines are recorded for the character to be carried on posthumously. Or there’s a ship class and/or archaeology institute named after him.

I don't know about seven (five, maybe).

Sir Patrick bought a house in California. He seems committed to the long haul.

They've just produced an audio drama ("No Man's Land"). They're spending an AWFUL lot of money on something that's supposedly going to pull up stakes after S3.

Maybe they could do what they're now doing for Janeway on Prodigy: turn him into a hologram.

Um, I don't think he bought a house in CA because of his work on Picard; in fact it was Stewart's insistence that they film in L.A. (Read: Ups the production cost significantly with no real extra value per dollar spent); as they would have rather done in in the new Studio they've built in Toronto Canada.

So yeah, Stewart insisting they film in L.A. was not a 'positive' for Paramount, and it may factor in any future decisions to renew/continue (assuming Patrick Stewart is still interested beyond Season 3, and has the strength to continue as the years pass.)

Patrick Stewart bought a house in CA because he likes the weather in CA and probably the view - and he can afford to live where he wants.

The tax credit California is giving the show certainly helps.

Maybe things have balanced out?

Canada is plenty busy (Strange New Worlds and Disco are both filming there).

I'm going to guess that Patrick Stewart also owns a house in England, and probably a few elsewhere as well. Also: (a) if you can afford it, it's cheaper to own in California than rent, and (b) the resale is currently through the roof. So, it's a win-win.

I'm a CA native and love the state - but yeah, no. If you're in TV production you still will get more 'bang' for your production dollar in Canada or Georgia - and believe me, studios count EVERY penny and always come up with creative financing where somehow EVERYTHING lost money - so they don't have to pay 'a piece of the profit' clauses. Don't need to pay if you can show (and get a Judge/Jury to believe) you lost your shirt.

That's what sank Xena and Hercules (Lucy Lawless and Kevin Sorbo sued Universal for a share of the profits).
