Is Star Trek 2009 overhyped by desesperate Trek fans?

I think the words of JTK himself says it all:

"It's about the future, Madame Chancellor. Some people think the future means the end of history. Well...We haven't run out of history quite yet. Your father called the future...the undiscovered country. People can be very frightened of change."

I don't quite understand why people who are fans of the film are so defensive when someone comes in and points out shortcomings in the film and challenge its merits.

This is afterall a discussion board where presumably individuals come to be exposed to a variety of ideas and opinions. If you agree with it, fine. If you don't cool. But if it really bothers you it is probably best to simply avoid the internet and discussion boards so one can continue to not have their bubble busted about the quality of the film.

People are upset when you point out the shortcomings of this film is, because they like this film. And by pointing out how utterly stupid the plot of this film is, it makes those that love this stupid plot, well seem stupid. :angryrazz:

It must be a very lonely time for the old school Trek fans, who are bashing this new Trek.

We are the NEW TREK, Resistance is futile, you WILL be Assimilated.:borg:
Or have your fandom die fighting this new collective of fans.

Seriously guys, people at work that have never said two words about any Trek are now gushing over this new movie. Everybody who see's it loves it.

Of my real life contacts(not the internet) not one person has disliked it, they all say it's awesome.

This board is magnet for the negative nellies. And this is an aberration from reality.

I don't have to turn off my brain to believe that a genius, even one from the 20th century, can't conceive of three-dimensional combat in space as Khan couldn't in TWOK. I'm a desk jockey academic and I have precious little knowledge of warfare and battle, but even I'm not dumb enough to fall for Kirk's "clever trick". I suspend my disbelief and move on while enjoying a good adventure story with a tragic ending.
That scene just shows experience > genius.
Its not hard to believe even a genius wouldnt think of move a ship in a Z axis, its 2 dimensional thinking, and that's what khan is used to. I'm sure if khan had more space time logged in commanding a star ship, he would very quickly realize that point.

I don't have to turn off my brain to believe that Kirk, known hot-head and Grand Master of It-Sounded-Like-A-Good-Idea-At-The-Time, would go venture out into a hostile environment because he would never dream of sitting tight and waiting for rescue. Is it idiocy? Yes. Is it idiocy that's perfectly in character for Kirk? Yes. Prime Kirk has pulled off some ludicrous stunts and gotten away with not being called a blazing idiot only because he succeeded. It looks like this Kirk is much the same. Frankly, I didn't have to suspend my disbelief at all there. It would have been an insane stretch to have him poke some buttons futilely, say "Oh well, I wouldn't want to go out and freeze to death," and wait patiently.
If your point is to show how stupid this nukirk is, the you have succeeded. At least the nukirk could of gotten the emergency supplies off that pod. How many times have we seen a shuttle crush or a pod crush in star trek? And every single time there are emergency supplies. I dont even think the old kirk would be reckless enough to walk 14km in frozen snow, with dangous wild animals around.

Rob

Wow when you dont have the intellect to come up with a defense, you resort to 40 year old virgin jokes.
You are so cool.
Would you be my new best friend?

This has got to be my favourite star trek movie of all time, I love the way they showed how everyone met in the first instance

I care precious little about civility when an opinion is offered, I only demand that it be backed up by evidence and reasoning. That's why I get so riled up in these threads, because the reasoning is often so shallow and so many of the opinions are supported only by accusations aimed at the people who liked the film that they were distracted by the explosions and shiny effects and somehow missed how awful the film was underneath the summer blockbuster glitz. The Stop-Having-Fun-Guys seem to be on a crusade to ruin the movie for as many people as they can bash with their Keyboards Of Truth.
To that i would agree with you.

And I only expect that the pro side follow the same rules.
Back up your reason for liking this movie other than the fact that it looks so cool and shinny, and some many other people have like it. so it must be good.

Wait, wait, wait. You're expecting James Kirk to stay in the pod and wait for rescue that may never come. From being familiar with the character, that doesn't seem like something he'd do.
I'm pretty sure the escape pod computer provided automated instructions for the occupant, in this case Kirk, to remain inside the pod and await retrieval. So I'm sure there would be someone coming to retrieve him. Kirk took it upon himself to leave it.

There is NO WAY the original James T. Kirk would just lie in the pod waiting to be rescued.

very true..
it sorta reminded me of when kirk and spock divide up to look for the horta.

and he did leave the pod with a pack.
which he probably broke down and put into different parts of the jacket.
i just doubt they would leave him with a phaser.
;)

I have a beautiful wife and a healthy and enjoyable sex life (which has produced two children) and also a healthy distaste for some of the more nonsensical parts of the new Trek film. The two can exist together. :)

Yes he did have a pack, a nice detail that could have been left out with no damage to the storyline.

I remember in the first season of Lost getting very frustrated at how dumb it was when they killed the polar bear and did not eat it. There are a few wastage scenes like that. Then I realized, hey this is not Survivor. It is not the story of surviving. It is a different story and it doesn't have to clutter itself up with a survival story. I don't need to see Kirk putting rations into his pocket just because the pack isn't visible in the next scene, it's not a story about surviving.

So what is the scene about? Kirk being eaten by a 4 legged spider? Kirk meat is more tasty than a polar bear? I seem to remember that spider knocked off that bear and went for kirk.

Oh right the scene was about conveniently placing kirk at where spock is.

Yes indeed it's about Kirk's destiny to meet Spock.

I haven't any problem with the destiny side, it seems to go hand in hand with time travel which often has elements of time currents moving to align themselves in some way.

Based on the red creature's mouth aperture I like to call it a snow squid. If it is native to the planet it must be the dominant predator as its color is shows it doesn't need camouflage.

if you have issues with convience in a story and the odd twists and turns of destiny you might want to avoid everything from oepidus to tale of two cities and throw in moby dick.

i mean rachel found ishmael in the vastness of ocean.
it is called fiction.
