I think the next elephant will be born a snake.I don't think other Trek movies having bad plot would be a good reason to have a bad one in this movie too, even if it were true. Thats part of the point I'm making here. One good thing about this movie is the budget and its production value. I think the next movie will also be a sci-fi action movie thats why I compare it to other action movie such as Matrix, Batman Begins. Which had better story and drama.
Of course, we both could be wrong, with me more likely than you. But you can't prosecute on the power of your psychic ability.
As far as I can remember, the only non-scifi action movie Trek had was TMP - The Motionless Picture. Then Khannnnnn!, then Cho-E-Chu!, "The Voyage Home," perhaps, could be better called a comedy...
"The Final Fronteer" wasn't too much action... but I wouldn't hold it up as a pargon of virtue...
"The Undiscovered Country" was action, "Generations" had the silly string and Soren, Klingons kill the E; "First Contact" Definitely action, "Insurrection" action plus opera plus pimples, and then "Nemesis." Action and "Star Trek" are not necessarily strangers, on film or on TV.
As far as it goes, Cdr., voicing possible concerns about the next film, I'm with you - I think we all are. But this time out, they did what they had to do, which was really a pretty big task. They sold Star Trek as a viable commodity again. That meant selling a new cast in probably the most iconic television roles in history. They sold Trek as something that some average joe could sit down and rock with, which was probably an even harder sell, since star trek hasn't "rocked" since the Beatles.
So, for this film, high marks - for what it had to be. This film was not, nor could it have been, in a plot-forward mode. You seriously need to time out the action via stopwatch - I did. What they crammed into their allotted time was about as lean as it could get without dropping a stitch.
Next film - we're all watching - no excuses left. They had their first shot, and as first shots go, I think they outdid every previous first-effort reincarnation - "Encounter at Farpoint," "Generations," "Emissary," "Caretaker"...
But all of them had a damned hard road - introducing characters and creating an environment while attempting to put some kind of story together to make the mess of exposition palateable. We don't remember them for their rocky beginnings - we remember them for what they made of themselves afterwards.
Let's see what they have.
