Is SNW too much of an ensemble show?

I was noticing this season how over the course of six weeks, we have had shows focused on six different characters. I feel like Anson Mount is severely underused as a great lead actor (and captain)....it's strange. With only 10 episodes per season, it feels like they need to focus on the leads and sprinkle in the supporting cast. At least let Captain Pike do the traditional Captains Log before kicking off the show. Do we need to have each character have a personal log kicking off the episodes?

Boy, the Powers That Be can't win. Folks continually excoriated DISCO for focusing on Michael Burnham and not fleshing out the bridge crew fast enough. Now we're complaining that SNW is too much of an ensemble show?
Yeah, no kidding. Frustrating as I'll get out.

"Make Star Trek different?"
"Like this?"
"No! That's wrong. Make it more of the same!"

SMH.

Someone on another board said Mount had a kid before season 2 started filming (that I can verify) and wanted a lighter load (that I cannot verify).

No, it is not "too much." It's good as an ensemble show and there's no reason for it to be anything else.

Know what else? If we ever do see a new version of the original characters serving aboard the Enterprise, ala TOS, that'll surely be an ensemble as well.

The show's not about Pike. It's about all of them.

A lot of folks are under the impression it was anyway due to the efforts of the actors playing the secondary characters at 70s conventions plus the 80s movies throwing them a bone, even though half of them never even got first names.

I also remember Anson Mount talk about having a lighter work load....so I'm not surprised he is not featured heavily in many eps ..

I think it could be argued that Pike's arc on SNW was largely played out in season 1. His future was a recurring theme throughout the season but by episode 10 he appeared to have come to a better understanding of it and accepted that he could not reasonably alter what was going to happen to him. It's not clear where the character goes from here in my opinion and the reduction of Pike's screentime in season 2 suggests the writers haven't managed to drive his storyline forward. It might be that the writers were forced to focus much more on the other characters because they're unsure of what to actually do with Pike now. I completely appreciate I will probably be proved wrong, though, and I hope that happens soon.

Also, the seasons are far too short for Star Trek imo. TNG commonly had 26 episodes. Episode 6 of a TNG season was right at the beginning but we're now on the home straight in SNW. I don't know if they have enough episodes to do everyone justice in a more ensemble focused show. Having said that, I really like all the characters and the cast are excellent.

I don't mind it being an ensemble, but I want to see more Pike, less Kirk.

Also, someone needs to throw Ortegas a bone, and I think the writers are plain stumped over what to do with Una. Although she could have been effectively used just about everywhere Kirk has appeared this season.
