Is SNW getting too goofy?

That's too bad. There's nothing like getting lost in a book, show, or movie. Yes, you come back to reality, but for a while, you're in a different world. Loads of fun.

As a GIGANTIC Tolkien fan, Fellowship of the Ring was this kind of experience for me when it came out in theaters. Particularly since Peter Jackson apparently imagined Middle Earth almost exactly the same way I did. In a very rare mental exercise for me, I just sank back in the movie seat, shut out the world, and lived in middle Earth for three hours. I don't think I stopped smiling for a week after that premiere.

If you're being pulled out of the story and remembering that it's just pretend and the people are actors, something's not right.
That's my view as well. Take me in to the story. I don't want to think about actors. Any more than I am concerned with how tech lines up in another series.

If I'm focused on the actor or external minutia the story has failed by some measure.

That's the same with most actors trying to do their jobs, I see them for them, not their portrayals.
Their job is just that, a job to me.
Their jobs are to convince you that they are someone else. If you can't see the character they've created then they aren't doing their jobs.

And also, this assertion kind of seems like bullshit? (And if you are a person on the autism spectrum I apologize as I know this is an experience some have.)

But, if not, why watch a show about a ship of a space-faring organization traversing the galaxy, crewed by members of interesting, diverse people from different planets, if all you experience is actors in colorful outfits saying words about stuff?

I personally don't want to know much about the actors themselves - or as I told a friend once (a million years ago) "I don't care about Patrick Stewart's personal life. I'm not in lust with Patrick Stewart. I'm in lust with Jean-Luc Picard."

I know what their jobs are, that's not the issue. It's just how my brain is wired.
It's not their fault, like I stated before, this applies to ANY & ALL fictional mediums I watch.
Nothing personal about their acting abilities, it's just how I think.
After you've grown up and realize that everybody is "Acting as their character" for their professional job, it just becomes reality.
It's like how kids lose a bit of that sparkle behind their eyes when you tell them that "Santa isn't Real".
So you find other aspects of life & story telling to enjoy, especially in the stories that I read / watch.

I'm not on any sort of Autism Spectrum, it's just how my mind is wired.
You have nothing to apologize for, it's how I've been thinking for quite a while since I was little.

Because I enjoy the show, simple as that; the show is fun to watch, Star Trek is a Universe I want humanity to aspire to become. With all the Good & Bad that entails, because it shows us "Hope" that there is a far greater tomorrow that we can aspire to become as a species, society, nation-state, technology wise, cultural wise, etc.

That's great for you, I'm different, I want to know as much about every single Actor as I can.
I love reading and doing research on my free time. So if it's a actor I like, I'll go do the research.

I'm just a different cat, don't worry about it.
There are different people out there who can enjoy the same things in different ways.
No two people have to be alike. We can all enjoy the same hobbies and see it in completely different lens.
That's perfectly fine.

The private lives of actors and actresses is usually very unenjoyable, or just outside my interest because it's not anything special. It's just another job.

Regarding the upcoming musical episode, we don't actually *know* it will be light-hearted. Thinking back to The Bitter Suite on Xena and Once More With Feeling on Buffy, while OMWF had some light-heartedness, both were actually emotionally deep and heartwrenching.

"Is SNW getting too goofy?"
(Watching M'Benga and Chapel suffering from PTSD and probably hiding the truth about the murder of a Klingon ambassador)
Yeah, sure...

Not just that... Even though Those Old Scientist had some very silly humor, it has some intensly heart felt moments and good drama as well. Something can have humor and still be emotional. As @Commander Troi mentioned, the Buffy musical episode had some very deep and dark moments.

This is exactly my thought. The magic spell in OMWF caused the characters to sing about their deepest feelings, things that they never wanted to express aloud. Then in the episodes after OMWF, the characters had to deal with the fallout of their friends learning their secrets.

If SNW goes the same route, well, almost every character has some kind of secret that they don’t want to get out.

Yep. "The Bitter Suite" literally began with a furious Xena trying to kill Gabrielle, who she blamed for her son's death, and was the culmination of a season-long arc in which various lies and betrayals had created a bitter rift between Xena and Gabby. It was not light-hearted at all.

Considering the promo, and the pattern of SNW to do a light episode right after a dark one, my money is on the musical being a comedy/light-hearted episode.

Especially when there was so much dancing in the promo. I never saw the BUFFY episode (or the show), but if memory serves, there really wasn't much, if any, dancing in XENA's "THE BITTER SUITE".

The SNW teaser does make it look joyous and exuberant.

Although I'm guessing that Laan's gonna get a big tear-jerking ballad that will break our hearts. Kinda like "On My Own" from LES MIZ. Since the trailer shows her singing alone in her room, and Lord knows she has plenty of angst and secret sorrows to sing about.

Still waiting to watch tonight, but I think it helps to think of seasons one and two as one full season. I'm certainly going to binge it as such. It give you that perfect mix of all types of Trek.
