Is SNW getting too goofy?

So what? Whenever an actor looks different from their character, the obvious explanation is that it’s the character design. Then the obvious next question (if you have to discuss it) should be why did they make that choice for the character, not why isn’t the character more attractive?

That might be obvious to you, but that's not what I usually think about whenever I see them on screen or in any media.

I usually think about the actors looks first over their character portrayals.
I don't really pay attention to their characters that much in most shows.
I see the actors mostly as the actors instead of the characters that they portray most of the time.
That's usually why I mostly remember the actors name instead of their character in everything I see them in.

e.g. Tom Cruise is just "Tom Cruise" in a movie or show.
I don't see Tom Cruise as "Ethan Hunt" in the Mission Impossible Movies.
I know he's trying to portray "Ethan Hunt", but that's just part of his requirement as his acting job.

Same with most other actors in most series.

Whenever I see Patrick Stewart, I see him, not "Captain Jean-Luc Picard" more often then not.
I know he's trying to portray "Captain Jean-Luc Picard", but in my mind, I'm mostly looking at the actor.
Ergo I see Patrick Stewart acting as his most famous character that he's well known for.

That's the same with most actors trying to do their jobs, I see them for them, not their portrayals.
Their job is just that, a job to me.

Most Vulcans / Romulans seem to culturally go for the classic Bowl Cut hair-style.
It's been protrayed that way for countless shows.
It was never portrayed that way in TOS, that was something that started in the Berman era Star Trek series because of course they had to have every different alien easily identifiable. I think it really turned Vulcans and other aliens into caricatures, in a way worse than TOS never did.

So them getting away from that idea that all Vulcans, Klingons, Andorians, et. al, all have similar hairstyles is a breath of fresh air.

TOS was the one Trek series I never watched.
It's on my eventual "To Do" list at some point, but I've pretty much seen most of Star Trek except for TOS / Some of the TOS Movies.

I’ll admit I haven’t read through this entire thread, so hopefully I’m not overly rehashing what has been discussed already, but I appreciate how it seems like SNW is trying to cover the a wide range of Trek moods and themes while being constrained with ten episode seasons.

It CAN’T be easy for the show runners and writers to figure out which story ideas to use when they don’t have the luxury of a 25+ episode season to work with. Kudos to them for putting out the quality of episodes they have been because I’m sure some brilliant ideas haven’t made the cut (yet) because of the limits of a shorter season.

Weren't we supposed to drop the haircut discussion?
You might say it got... cut short.

Yes, drop the haircut stuff, in case that wasn't clear.

As for this:

I see the actors mostly as the actors instead of the characters that they portray most of the time.

That's def an outlier opinion. Usually if a storyteller does it correctly, you see that character, at least temporarily, as real, and get lost in the story that is being told.

If you're being pulled out of the story and remembering that it's just pretend and the people are actors, something's not right.

I've only been able to read some of this thread, as quite a bit of it just... went off the rails.

To answer the question of the thread topic... I don't think so.

TOS, and DS9 in particular, had a number of episodes that were comedic, light-hearted, or just plain silly. In fact, every series with the exception of DISCO and PICARD has done this. (The extremely serialized nature of both shows really preclude this from happening.) It's been ingrained in the franchise almost from the beginning.

However, I CAN see why some might feel this way about SNW because of the short seasons. The other shows had the benefit of having over 20 episodes per season, so it doesn't feel like it's going silly. A 10 episode season with 3 of them being comedic/light-hearted might feel like it's treading into that territory because the seasons are so compressed.

Considering we got a dark episode sandwiched right between two light ones, I think SNW can be best described as going for the balance, which is what DS9 excelled at. So far, SNW has been good at striking that balance.

All that was just a long winded way of me saying no, SNW is not getting silly. It's honoring and remembering the core of TOS and the franchise in general.

That's true for me and most fictional mediums.
I don't see the actors as the characters they portray because in my mind, I know they're acting and they're playing a character.
That takes precedence and I just learn to enjoy the story while seeing it as it is fun fictional entertainment to enjoy.
There's nothing that can be done anymore to trick me into seeing that character as a real person or the actor as that character.

It's like when you tell a child that "Santa isn't real". Once you pop the fictional bubble, it stays that way forever.
I'm fine with it, I just learn to enjoy the story, writing, & acting for what it is; a lot of fun to be had on their many adventures.

That's too bad. There's nothing like getting lost in a book, show, or movie. Yes, you come back to reality, but for a while, you're in a different world. Loads of fun.
I still manage to enjoy it, I read alot of manga & watch plenty of Anime / Live-Action TV shows & movies.

Nothing stops me from enjoying the fictional entertainment, but it's still that, it's fiction at the end of the day.

It's like reading about Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn the very first time.
Enjoying their misadventures about what life was like as a kid back in those days.

This is why I’ve only ever watched a handful of interviews with actors; if you only see them in character you can enjoy them as characters without any pesky memories of the actor him/herself intruding.
To me, Picard is Picard always and forever without end, amen.

I love interviews about BtS (Behind the Scenes) stuff, so it's fun to watch them.
I like hearing what the staff has to say along with the actors.
So I personally like watching those interviews.

Yup.

BTS is fun for outtakes, VFX, and design work.
