Is SNW getting too goofy?

Did anyone else notice that a certain LT James T. Kirk appears to figure prominently in the teaser for the musical episode next week?

Guy must hate spending time aboard the Farragut! ;)

Humor is an odd thing. Jackie Chan once said that the Rush Hour movies would not be considered funny in China (I personally do not know what the box office for those films were in China or if they were even released there). It's also unclear how qualified Jackie Chan is to supposedly speak for most Chinese people.

I was born in America, but I had a very strict Asian upbringing. It's possible that this has affected my view on shows like Lower Decks, which apparently enough viewers (I'm assuming mostly American, but maybe other Western countries as well) find hilarious but I don't. People accuse me in real life of not having a sense of humor, but I think anyone who's seen my frequent jokes here, even if they don't find them funny, will be forced to admit that I find different things funny.

Which gets me back to whether it's a cultural or background thing that determines one's sense of humor.
Humor using idioms certainly wouldn’t translate into another language, or cultural references.

It can absolutely be a cultural thing. For instance I didn't find Fawlty Towers funny as a kid, I just didn't get the British humor. Today it is one of my favorite shows of all time. That was after being exposed to several other British comedies and eventually giving Fawlty Towers another try.

I think we really need something like DS9 Star Trek series.

Star Trek Picard season 3 was that but now it's over.

Now we gonna have:

Star Trek Strange New Worlds

Star Trek Lower Decks

Star Trek Prodigy

Star Trek Starfleet Academy

All of four show are mostly for kids and teenagers. We need something more serious like Star Trek Picard season 3 was and like DS9 was in the 90s.

"Serious" doesn't make something "adult". In fact, it's usually the opposite, as "Serious" usually devolves into pretentious, puerile pablum. Like DS9 and Picard.

Meanwhile, SNW actually deals with situations actual adults experience and presents themes with which they can relate.

I am obligated to quote Terry Pratchett here:

“The problem is that we think the opposite of funny is serious. It is not. In fact, as GK Chesterton pointed out, the opposite of funny is not funny, and the opposite of serious is not serious. Benny Hill was funny and not serious; Rory Bremner is funny and serious; most politicians are serious but, unfortunately, not funny. Humour has its uses. Laughter can get through the keyhole while seriousness is still hammering on the door. New ideas can ride in on the back of a joke, old ideas can be given an added edge.”

I once moderated a panel on British humor vs. American humor, featuring Pratchett and Esther Friesner. Easiest gig I've ever had.

"Terry, meet Esther. Esther, meet Terry. Go!" :)
I watched the amazing maurice, a recent movie based on a pratchett book. Thats how you do humor

What a great time to be alive!

Star Trek Prodigy
Maybe. Still a great show.

Star Trek Starfleet Academy
Why not watch a show before judging it?

What the fuck are you talking about?

Its why James Gunns style of humor (already toned down from unfortunate tweets that got him in trouble with Disney) is so popular,
You obviously do not understand the complete difference between the two things you just compared.
The tweets you are referencing were completely insensitive and deploringly derogatory.

The humor in the Guardians movies is nowhere near the same level of disparagement.
