That's a good point. Many sci-fi concepts don't need the big budget. At the same time, certain types of ambitious stories can now be brought to the screen as the creators visualize without compromising due to limited effects. So I'd say the sci-fi in films, at least, is better.

I can't comment on literary science fiction. I mostly read the classics, when I have the time for fiction.
Trek XI works and gets leeway if you perceive it like Star Wars. But it suffers if you compare it to what came before because it fails to achieve that adventure/drama balance that many people remember TOS for.
