It's different. But it's a different era. There are massive differences between TOS and TNG. TOS started in 1966, and TNG in 1987, a difference of 21 years. Now the scary part: Discovery launched in 2017, a difference of 30 years set it apart from TNG. It's honestly a different era, and it shows.

Discovery and Picard have some of the best first seasons in the history of Star Trek. Which isn't the compliment it may sound like, as first seasons are traditionally the worst. Both of them have issues, primarily in the writing and plots because the casting and characters are among the best in the franchise. But DSC did improve in season 2 and Picard was much better than that. I understand most of the issues many people had with Picard, but I honestly don't share them much at all. I even really enjoyed the finale, though it definitely had room for improvement. Plus Nepenthe is, imo, the best episode of Trek since DS9 was on the air. Possibly longer.

So are they among the best things on tv? No. But are they good? Yes. Do they still have the potential to get even better over time? Yes.
