Is Janeway a bad Captain?

I dislike the crazy use of "Keep Calm" shirts but I have to say I'd like to custom make my own shirt:

Keep Calm
Janeway's got the

Janeway rocks.

To be honest though I think Chakotay would have been a good captain. Especially if he had been played as more of a bad ass like in that simulation episode.

I don't think Chakotay would have traveled as far. He accepted his 'fate' much easier. Firm when he needs to, loyal, a deep thinker, a spiritual man. He strikes me more of an ambassador type. Bridging the gaps between peoples/species.

I didn't feel particularly excited about him as Captain in Before and After but that has me thinking who would be become without Janeway at his side? Confident, passionate? Or on the dark and narrow? Year of Hell comes to mind he almost became Annorax as Janeway became Ransom so who knows for sure what Captain he'd be. Maybe he'd consult Janeway with his Acochimoya meditation :-) he's also been wish washy with character development. I don't know how much confidence I'd have.

Chakotay would have found one of those faux eden's space is littered with and convinced everyone to settle and then the toxic time bomb of death that those places always have stored somewhere would have gone off and they would have had to leave paradise and no more sunshine and tilling fields for them again they were alone in cold space and it would have been super poignant.

That story couldn't have happened with Janeway.

Longer Answer: No more better or worse than Kirk, Picard, Sisko or Archer.
Janeway is deliberately putting her crew in danger without a more convincing reason other than "I wanna see pretty new shiny things" and they are stranged 60 years from home. I would say Janeway is a worse captain than Picard by miles. I don't believe Picard would have made some of Janeway's stranger decisions.

If she was such a terrible captain why did everyone love her?

Yah, go in universe for your explanation.

They loved her because they had to. Voyager was not very good at keeping arcs going so unlike DS9 there were many relationship “reset buttons”, there would be some major falling out in an episode, only to be forgotten by all parties in the next episode.

But how many times did Janeway and Chakotay have disagreements? On top of the example given by the OP there was a major row between them in Equinox, where Janeway went way over the line. Or how many times did Janeway treat the Doc as a tricoder, even after she had granted he was much more than that?

Basically, the characters on the show loved her because the writers wrote them that way.

My feelings are not controlled by B&B.

I don't really post screencaps, but I always liked her more (in terms of badassery) in Microcosm. Ponytail look (My favorite of her hairstyles) and tank top. So awesome.

I don't think Janeway was a bad Captain, but she was written inconsistantly. I always go back to the way she was written in the season 5 premiere, Night. In a time where the Crew needed her the most, she was locked in her Quarters sobbing about the decisions she made. I get what they were trying to do, but it didn't seem like a time or a place to become weak.

But isn't that being a bad captain?

I mean, a lot of people will agree that she was inconsistently written, and then say she's not a bad captain, but how else can you define "bad captain"?

There are a number of episodes where she makes terrible decisions, takes actions unbecoming an officer not to mention a captain, and generally does things not in the interest of her ship and crew.

Yeah, there are many episodes where she does just fine, but its not like anyone is saying she was wrong 100% of the time. Just that she was wrong enough of the time to make her a bad captain.

It's a good thing she's just a fictional character then! Whew!
