Is Janeway a bad Captain?

She was a bad Captain at times. That is on the writers, not on Mulgrew's performance which was generally very strong. I'd say who cares if she was a bad Captain? The point of the show was to be entertaining, not to show "perfect Captain Janeway". If some of her bad decisions led to more entertainment and drama then I am all for them.

Now if you want to call out the crew for not challenging some of her more questionable decisions in a stronger way that is completely fair and again that is down to inconsistent writing.

I am watching voyager again. Now in season 6, which I seen before enterprise was out. And thanks to T'pol I have somewhat became addicted to star-trek (sad because its true) and now playing X-Box STO (star trek online) and what I have seen is the whole voyager plot / casting (from the directors end) was all screwed up, I even just read that even an episode from voyager was rejected from the Star trek world.

I also think there were some very vocal members of fandom who went into the show not wanting to like it simply because the captain wasn't a man. If they were receptive to a woman captain, they would say Mulgrew was all wrong for the part because of an existing dislike for the actress due to a previous role or gossip column articles. Some complained she was too old, so apparently she wasn't pretty enough for them.

I hated the fact that she wasn't a man. Now, she's my favorite captain of them all.

Really? because she couldnt figure out how to place delayed timer and blow the thing up a few seconds after they left back to the alpha quadrant. or at the very end when she is an old woman couldnt go back even further to get them home.

Well, needless to say, the first would have meant no show, unless you suggest that, at least, the idea was thought of and going to be executed, but something out of their control prevented it from being done. As to the second, are you saying that the Admiral should have prevented their departure or contact with the tetryon displacement, in the first place? Well, that would be kind of a kick in the guts, given all the people that say that nothing much that was really consequential happened on their three hour tour anyway. So, it would have turned out to be another dream in the shower?

Janeway, like the other Trek captains, was pretty damn good. And like the other Trek captains, she made her mistakes. One thing you can say about the Trek franchise, their leads have always been interesting and complex. There are no uber-ideal types among the bunch, thank goodness.

Of course she was a great captain. She had to resolve crises and overcome hurdles without any guidance or backup from back home whatsoever--and in unfamiliar territory dealing with God knows what. She also had to get a troublesome crew to work together like a finely-tuned machine. I think most people in her situation wouldn't have lasted inside of a year without either falling apart or the crew giving up and going, "Screw it! We're so far from home and might not get back so what's the point in listening to this dumb cow or following Starfleet protocol?"

Captain Kathryn Janeway was fine. It touched my heart, how she loved her crew and kept them under her wing, like a mother hen counting her chicks. What I did not care for was some of the writing regarding how she was, personally. For example, if a Man had written it that Janeway was so distraught over her father's death, that she lived like a hermit for months and months, until her sister got tired of enabling the shite ... it would be denounced as supremely sexist.

And yet, with Jeri Taylor's having penned it, now it's not sexist, at least ... it's just supremely retarded. Janeway's "not needing a Man," was stupid and false. A good book, that's what you're going to sustain yourself with, for the next 70 years? For real ...? There were other aspects of the character that weren't up to snuff, but it seemed to me, anyway, that Janeway's problems were personal, rather than professional.

Well, that Janeway took time to time some controversial decisions, does not make automatically of her a bad captain. Yes, she made some mistakes but what others would have done (Chakotay often made some mistakes of judgment too)? The most important is that, at the end, she brought back her crew safe and sound on Earth and for her people, whatever happpened during their journey of 7 years, she is a hero, like Archer, Kirk, Picard, Sisko were before, with their strengths and weaknesses!

Janeway is the BEST captain. She is an updated, female Kirk. She made hard choices that would have sent Picard weeping to councilor Troi, curled up in the fetal position. She was relentless in her dedication to her extended crew. DS9 spent more time talking about how great Sisko was, instead of showing any reason to believe it.

Sisko punched Q.

As for Janeway, she was as competent as the writers would allow her. I agree with most that she was a pretty good captain overall, but there are times were she comes across as a bit unhinged. Caretaker certainly showcased her willingness to stand up for her crew and not be pushed around, but then you get her interactions with the Borg and Species 8472 that make me go "Wow, maybe not the best choice."

Overall, she's ok.
