Is it time to put Star Trek to rest?

Star Trek remains one of the biggest legacy franchises in the world. It's not going anywhere any time soon. And it's exceedingly close-minded to think there is someone out there who can make it good again.

Is it in need of a good hiatus? Probably.

But what it needs most of all is to cut itself off from the past Too much of this very thread is stuck in the "good-old-days" with arguments that can be easily defeated by a single image of a B-25.

And that's also the problem with modern Trek. It's stuck in the past, trying way too hard to appease the lot of you, even though you're not watching anyway. It's completely sacrificed everything else in order to pack as much nostalgia in as possible. This needs to end.

Full. Hard. Reboot. And some young, fresh perspectives. And certainly no one involved who is trying to bring to life ideas he wrote in his notebook in ninth grade.

Also, those of you doing the whole "Gone woke!" crap need to put down the device, go straight to the store, and buy a green curly wig, a round rubber nose, and a pair of comically over-sized shoes.

This seems to be exactly what a lot of the critics on here are saying, though; one of the foremost criticisms of the recent stuff is that it's so heavily and deliberately tied to decades-old ideas that other writers came up with.

And yet also hates all that old stuff and wishes to spitefully undo it in a brain-contorting paradox.

I did like that Seven got to show normal human emotions and break down over having to put Icheb out of his misery, so I just look at the Icheb torture and execution as a Seven of Nine character building sequence rather than the death of another character. I didn't mind Icheb on VOY and thought it was kinda cool that they brought him back for PIC, but his demise was just not designed to be about Icheb.

Could not agree more. I’ve been saying for years: All you need for Trek is Kirk, Spock, McCoy and the Enterprise. And blow everything else up. Use existing continuity as a template but not as something to be utterly beholden to. And other than that, no real connection to the past.

Have the series set in the further future. Have the ship be on the edge of the new frontier. Tell the stories about people, not about technology. Don’t worry about LCARS and hisenberg compensators. Worry about the bond between these three men and how they traverse the unknown together. Tell real frontier stories. Bring back the ideas of each hour telling a story about something that affects society on a daily basis. Don’t back down. That’s Star Trek at its best. (IMO, of course.)

This. The reason I like Discovery more than TNG initially was because of the people. They were flawed yer capable.

My biggest criticism of Discovery is the era. Put it in the 25th century and away you go.

Icheb death didnt bother me, but legacy deaths did get to be a bit much as the series went on. It got to the point that when I saw Ro Lauren my first thought was "How long before she bites the dust?"

There is no data of any kind that showed strong support for SFA outside of a tiny group from within this tiny little slice of the internet. But even with SNW showing far more popularity with the same data, it still wasn't enough to keep it going even for a full 5 seasons. (10 episode seasons at that.) The franchise will probably get a rest for awhile, which isn't a bad idea. It will come back at some point. If another star wars sized, science fiction hit from nowhere happens, you better believe they will haul this franchise out of mothballs quicker than you can say tribble.

That's how we got TMP. Paramount saw the potential for $$$ in the success of Star Wars

I have a feeling that the streaming landscape would look vastly different had the industry not dealt with the triple whammy of the pandemic, followed by the WGA and SAG strikes. Those certainly helped push the streaming bubble to a head a lot quicker.

If it were done when 'tis done, then 'twere well it were done quickly

That is an issue. It's not forward looking enough.

The irony. A SF show about the future gazing into it's own navel. I'd rather it end than mutate into unrecognizability or bad self-parody
