Luke wasn't lying, why would he? He had a friend who backed him up. I know the T-16 wasn't a fighter but...

It's better writing. We get this background from Luke. We see him with his model sky hopper and then it kind of jumps to that next level, where he does something almost hard to believe. I don't think anyone entirely believes he should have been able to mix it with experienced pilots but I believed him more than Rey! Come on she got in not just an ordinary craft she got in an iconic piece of Star Wars and got to Han level in a blink of an eyelid.

None of that is in the film. That's the point. We have Luke say he is a pilot. Rey says she is a pilot. Both demonstrate that skill. So, they are pilots. The evidence is on screen.

Rey practised flying in flight simulators found in the crashed ships according to out of movie material.

I'm pretty sure (Biggs was it) said Luke was a pretty good bush pilot in the big fight scene. There was that whole bit about old times etc. It wasn't just Luke lying. Though again this comes back to whataboutisms. If it were then it even emphasises more how badly written Rey's set up to fly the Falcon was.

Didn't think we were, but I recognize the quote. It just demonstrates the amount of slack that is given to Luke over Rey.

I like this article too. The whole article is worth reading, but this quote stood out to me as it relates to Luke's skills:

Wasn't that scene cut? The overall result is the same. Both Luke and Rey claim to be pilots and then demonstrate that skill.

I believe something like that happened, but that has nothing to do with your post claiming that the movie states the skyhopper and the x-wing have similar controls.

We really don't need Luke to prove anything. She strongly implied she was a pilot and then went on to fly a ship. There's really nothing more that needs to be added.

The T-16 isn't a full motion space fighter, it can only stay some what near the surface. While the controls would be similar, Luke still wouldn't have the experience of dogfighting with and against trained fighter pilots.

Why? I don't dispute Luke as much because he was better written. He had experience as referenced in New Hope itself in flying. It was backed up by a friend.
