Is discovery worth it?

You are not clear if you are talking about money or time. If you don't want to pay the subscription fee there are websites where you can watch or download it for free, but you will have to wait a day or so for the new episode to post.
If you don't want to pay, don't watch.........I don't think telling someone to pirate it is a good idea.

If you like DS9, especially the later seasons, you'll like DSC.

If you want your Star Trek to be one-and-done "Planet of the Week", "Mystery of the Week", or "Anomaly of the Week" stories and nothing else, then it's not for you. Not to knock this type of Star Trek, but that's not what DSC is.

If you can't get passed "But, but, but it doesn't look like TOS!", then it's not for you either.

1st half of season...might have gone 'meh'.
I'd say 'yes' now...because I hope/feel all the creative talent will push it forward into interesting new territories.

You hated the sand planet that much that it was impossible to watch ?

Sounds objective.
I watched the whole episode and was thoroughly unimpressed with pretty much all of it, though the "sand planet" was pretty idiotic--not to mention a blatant violation of the Prime Directive.

You're new so you'll get away with a stern look and a last warning. Don't encourage media piracy on this site or you'll be gone from this place quickly. Comments to PM.

The first two episodes are probably the weakest ones so far, IMHO.

And if violations of the Prime Directive were enough to make us stop watching Trek, we would have all quit a very long time ago and many times over. ;)

I enjoy the side of star trek focused on asking ethical questions and creating political metaphors, much more than the episodes that are just sci fi action and shooting. From what I've heard about this series it sounds like its more focused on the latter. is that true? if so I'm not sure if I'm interested.
This element is present throughout the show as it has been in every spinoff of Star Trek. The first 4 episodes may not be very enjoyable to you because of the very different tone, but you should watch them as they set up the fifth episode which is much closer in tone to earlier Star Trek spinoffs. I think this is the point in the show where the stories written by the show creator had been used up and the new writers started taking the story in a different direction, making the characters more likable by having them make some difficult ethical decisions. At least this was the first episode to me that I felt like I'd just watched an episode of Star Trek afterwards. Your opinion of course may vary.

I sat down to watch Episode 1, open minded and hopeful. Barely five minutes in, I had to pause it, get a notepad and start writing down all the things that grated on me, of which there are many. Not been able to watch any more, there are just too many things wrong with the feel of it that I can't get into it.

I have never even thought of taking notes while watching anything..........if I did I think I would just turn it off. #justme

That's not a problem with the show. I've never heard of any show that made me (or anyone I've ever heard of) want to pull out a notepad, let alone in the first 5 minutes, before barely any story had unfolded.

So yeah, not a problem with the show. Sounds like you were ready and waiting to hate it.

Yep. That pretty much sums up my opinion. :)

Good missable episodes are "bottle" (DS9's Duet) and bad missable episodes are "filler" (VOY's tsunkatse).

To me, filler means episodes that were produced hastily to pad out a season when they were running short of ideas or time.

But there is a real definition of "Bottle episodes"-- those are stories that take place almost entirely within existing sets, with no major guest stars, in an effort to save budget for elsewhere in the season. They are more common in long seasons, you probably won't see them on shows like Discovery, Walking Dead, Westworld, Game of Thrones, etc. You might see an episode set entirely on the ship, but it wasn't likely produced in an effort to save money.

Does CBS own these boards or what?
No, but the board has rules (as you are new, it’s unlikely you’ve come across them). Here is the relevant information. The bolded text clearly includes discussions of unauthorized distribution of copyrighted material.

Okay, you copyright heroes win. I won't do that.

I am in the same boat as the OP. I am curious about the show, and have been on these boards now and then to gauge people's reactions. I think I'll give it a shot with the all-access free trial and binge watch a few of them.

If it is more like DS9 as some have suggested, I think I will like it.

Though disheartened at the pre-production photos that were released, like I said before I went in with an open mind, willing to give it a chance but there were just too many things that started bothering me pretty much from the moment it started. If the makers of STD had said, "We're giving Trek a full reboot," I would probably be able to sit down and watch it in its own right but they didn't, so I had to analyse it, compare it to what has come before. I was left with no strong impulse to even see how the first episode was resolved. As someone wrote on another fan site, STD is Trek in name only, which pretty much sums up my thoughts towards it.

Once the whole series is on Netflix, I may sit down and force myself to endure another episode or two, see if I can bring myself to give a damn about any of the characters, but I'm not holding out much hope. But that's just me, I'm sure many out there enjoy this show and will soon rank it as their favourite, but for me quality of Trek series has steadily declined after DS9.
