Is discovery worth it?

So I am trying to decide if discovery is worth watching. I will wait till the whole first season is out if I do watch it. But I was turned off by the trailers, they made it look like some generic sci fi action show. So my question is: is discovery good Star Trek? Or is it some generic sci fi show?

yes. it is. it's not TOS style star trek. it's not TNG-era (including ds9/voy/ent) trek but it definitely is star trek. watch the first nine episodes. if it's not doing it for you by then, then fair enough and move on :D

Watch the first 10..........that last one finally sank the hook in me.

Which, in all honesty, isn't that bad considering that it took TNG about 20+ episodes and DS9 about 2 full seasons (despite the excitement I felt after the premier) to hook me!

It's excellent television, but if you're desperate for something that feels like Star Trek, well...you'll be pleased.

The cast is uniformly good. Conceptually, it's brilliant. If what you want is the comfort of the familiar and the repetitious, this is not your show. If you want story over fanwank, it's Heaven.

Fixed that for you.

DS9 is the only show that hooked me from Season 1 Episode 1. All the other Treks I've seen needed at least a few episodes (TOS and ENT) to like two seasons (TNG) to get me invested.

The show is fine. Just not worth the subscription money. By a mile.
In fact, it got exactly that "get stuck while zapping"-quality. Were you wouldn't necessarily specifically seek out that show, but if it's on tv and you're watching anyway, you'll get adequately entertained for an hour.
Luckily it's freely available on Netflix... Everything else would be stupid :guffaw:

*rimshot*

But...ummmm...Netflix isn't free.

Just sayin'.

Yeah. But it's not as if Netflix is only offering this one show, and thereby essentially making you pay for a single show, instead of for a big suscription service.

Right, but in total fairness...it's not free. You'd need to pay for Netflix just the same as you'd need to pay for CBSAA if, all things being equal, you had neither.

Neflix was already a fully functional service before DIS. Thus, DIS was added "freely" to Netflix. They didn't charge extra for it. Thus making it appear "freely" on Netflix. Anticipating of course the existing of "Netflix" as a paid service in the first hand.
Contrasted to CBS, which as of now basically only exist as a "one new Star Trek show"-service, and a library for stuff they pulled from other services that was already free on tv.

Really not getting what this hair splitting is intended to accomplish here?

Not sure how "freely" the addition was considering my bill just went up two bucks.

Honestly, you can subscribe for one month at the end of February and watch the entire thing for $5.99.

Worth the money?
The time spent doing other things?
If you were going to relax and watch an episode of "TV" anyway, try ep. 3 and 4.

If you have better things to do with, like 15 hours, based on your above comments of what you like, you'd be fine without it.

I watch it each week basically because I started, my wife and Trekky child are too, and it gives us something to discuss. I'd be hard pressed to say I "like" it. But I don't dislike it. I like to find out what comes next.

I wasn't aware Discovery was the only thing on CBSAA.

CBSAA didn't charge extra for it either. They added it to their pre-existing service, for no extra charge.

They may not offer the wealth of content that Netflix does, they may not offer you the content to make it worth the subscription, but it's all personal taste. I gave up Netflix recently because they removed a lot of the shows I used to regularly watch, and not enough of the exclusive stuff appealed to me. I'll pick it up again I'm sure at some point, probably when Daredevil Season 3 releases. I'll binge it, and cancel.

CBSAA is worth it for me when Discovery is on, I cancelled when it was on hiatus. I'll cancel again when the season finishes. I may re-up to watch Twilight Zone when it releases.

This is the nature of streaming. The onus is now on CBS to provide enough content to make it worthwhile. But I do not begrudge them for using Trek to sell their service at all, and I certainly don't resent enough to boycott it.

And let's be honest, a lot of the stuff on Netflix is just crap. Quantity over quality. Netflix is now an exercise in "channel surfing."

The point where I decided to cancel Netflix was when I scrolled through viewing options for about half an hour and ultimately just decided to put on an old episode of Voyager.

Now don't get me wrong, there's LOTS of good stuff on it, but there's a lot of fluff like you say, and a lot of stuff I'm just not interested in. I've also burned through most of the good stuff, and all the stuff I rewatch regularly (Star Trek, Twilight Zone, Futurama, 30 Rock, etc.) can be found on other services.

Well, nobody can answer this except yourself.
Just beware, do not judge from the Pilot first two episodes, since the format changes from epi 3.
I would suggest to watch the first 4 episodes and if you like them you will probably enjoy the rest of it.

Don't you have to pay for Netflix? Besides it's my understanding that Netflix has the worldwide rights to DSC(expect the USA and maybe Canada).
