Is Anyone Else Seeing Lots of New Trekkies?

Too bad. You lost your badge the moment you defended those sycophantic non-fans that don't love every last nanosecond of Star Trek ever made.

I don't like Voyager. Do I have to turn in my Trekkie badge?
If beyond not liking Voyager, you only liked The Wraith of Khan, or you only liked City on the Edge of Forever, then yes you're not a "Trekkie." You're not a fan of the body of work that is Star Trek.

I know "Barbarella" fans. I know "2001: A Space Odyssey" fans
If there were over seven hundred Barbarella movies and episodes, and someone only liked that first film, it would be hard to call them a "Barbarella Fan."

Similarly, if you were only a fan of the 239th, 240th, and 241st issues of Batman comics, but disregarded the rest, then you are not a "Batman Comics Fan."

If the amount of Star Trek that you "embrace" is too narrow, too selective, at some point you can't call yourself a fan of Star Trek, and you are instead a "fan of the Nolan movies."

:)

Just curious, how much of Star Trek must one like to be considered a "trekkie". I mean I always gravitate towards 90s Trek and I always bring that up if someone were to ask me what parts of Star Trek I like. I'm not sure if that constitutes being a "trekkie" but I would think it's irrelevant if you like one thing or the entire franchise. It should be good to get new fans and to make sure Star Trek itself stays relevant so I say welcome to the new fans and hopefully the movies that are coming out currently make them interested in more trek to maybe go and chick out the stuff that came before.

Well, I tend to agree with the idea that one has to like A LOT of Trek to call themselves a Trekkie. I mean, the concept of fandom implies a deeper interest and a wider knowledge of whatever it is you're a fan of than just liking one movie or one series. And maybe I'm wrong, but my impression is that a "Trekkie" is a special variety of fan, one more dedicated perhaps. For example, before I came to this board and started taking active part in the community, and doing more than simply watching the movies/series, I didn't really think of myself as "Trekkie" per se. I was a fan of TNG, yes. But it was only after I saw all of the series and began reading about the Trek universe (Federation history, ships, alien races, etc.), that I actually felt I was approaching the level of involvement that warranted thinking of myself as a Trekkie.

 I think that about sums it up.

I'm sure many were converted as soon as Jane Fonda stripped during the opening credits. If there were 699 "Barbarella" stories (and yes, there were collected comic strips, but I never read them), I can imagine some fans not wanting to spoil their memories of that first film by witnessing poorer sequels.

But seriously, who are you to decide what makes a fan a fan? Surely fannish can be felt from within, not only decreed from outside? My level of inner-fannishness didn't increase as I saw more ST. I knew I was a fan at one movie.

How does that work?

The idea that you're not a real Trekkie unless you like X amount of episodes and movies is ridiculous. It's only a few steps from that "You're not a real Trekkie if you like JJ's evil movie" thread from a few weeks ago.

How about, "You're a Trekkie if you like Trek enough to call yourself a Trekkie"? It doesn't matter which. There are Enterprise fans here who can't bear the Original Series. There are DS9 fans who don't like anything but. You're a Trekkie if you think you're a Trekkie. Anything else is judgemental and silly.

Highlander

Highlander

Good example. Each "Highlander" film and series seemed to be completely/deliberately ignorant of the rest. And people could be fans of one aspect of the franchise and refuse to be even tempted by what came later.

No, it is not. Highlander was basically just going to be just that. One movie that didn't have 40ish years of fandom below it's belt, so sure it was easy to ignore what came after. Oh, and BTW, I am a fan of the series and at least 2 of the movies with Cristopher Lambert, so I would consider myself a fan of that franchise also.

How many episodes does it take before you become a Trekkie? Ten? Fifty? One hundred? How many episodes DOES IT TAKE, admiral?

 good one, I can see your Patrick Stewart impersonation.....:techman:

It definitely would take more than one movie IMO.

Fan comes from fanatic. You are not fanatic about something if you have only seen one movie or episode, enjoyed it but have not been interested enough to check out other movies or episodes. Lethargy is the very opposite of fanaticism. Some years ago I have last seen a soccer match on TV, I enjoyed it but it did not spike my interest in soccer.
That's why I think it is fair to say that every Trek fan likes at least one series or a bunch of movies.

More than one as, to repeat myself, you are not fanatic about something if you stop at one story while there are about six hundred more.
I like Star Wars but I am not a fan of it. Why? Because when I have first seen it I did not went loco and had an urge to see more of it. After I saw "Heroes and Demons" on the other hand I wanted to see more of VOY and then I stumbled over TNG and so on.

I think that in order to call yourself a Trekkie you should at the very least have seen most, if not all, of one of the shows. Just watching the movies alone does not make you a fan because the films are just a continuation of TOS and TNG. And the newest film is so far removed from everything before it that if you're just a fan of that alone you can only call yourself a ST09 fan, not a Trekkie or even a casual Trek fan.
Just my opinion.
