Is anyone else scared?

The only thing I'm scared if is the possibility of Abrams "listening to the fans." Direct-to-DVD? Trek is dead? Everything about Star Trek has sucked since DS9?

That's what'll kill us--not J.J. Abrams.

Even when Star Trek was good it still pretty much failed. The movies weren't huge blockbusters and only TNG got huge ratings. Most people don't give a crap about Trek whether it's good or bad.

Good or bad isn't the issue; what they need are the elements that make something popular. Recognition of a few crucial elements, ease of understanding what's at stake, a reason to care about the characters, and cool 'splosions are all important factors. If Star Trek can deliver that, there's no reason it can't be as popular as any other type of mass market entertainment.

Of course it would be nice if it were ALSO good. ;)

Exactly so.
No I'm not scared. This is actually the first time, in a long time that I haven't wanted to let out a yawn in-regard to Trek.

This movies primary goal is it shouldn't be boring... blah is what was killing Trek.

Not scared. For me, Kirk are Spock ARE Star Trek (with a little Picard thrown in for good measure). I'm glad to be getting new adventures with old friends.

Nice idea, unfortunately while I may agree that Kirk and Spock ARE Star Trek, I also recognize that to most of the English speaking planet, Shatner and Nimoy ARE Kirk and Spock, for better or worse.

I don't believe you can simply plug new actors into the same roles and expect it to be like old home week, and some of the casting for this film appears to be completely wrong even if you could.

I, personally, believe that there is a reason why the people behind this movie were so adamant early on about saying that this movie is NOT Star Trek XI, but rather simply Star Trek. It's not a continuation. It's not simply the next chapter. This movie WILL be different than the original. To what extent has yet to be determined. But, different none the less. I suspect that some aspects will be more different than others.

So, IMHO, your old friends are most likely gone unless you want to pick up a book.
