Is a DS9 film possible? {TV or Big Screen}

{I don't know if this is a 'Future Trek' post; but, since it is DS9 related, I'll post it here}.

Reading some Trek books, and reading some of the posts here had me wondering if a DS9 film could/would be possible.

The show DID, IMO have that 'Trek' feel..although, it took it in a different direction. {A feel that ENT should have had}.

I would like to see some, or most of the cast members return...and maybe see some Andorians or Tellerites return.

It is sometimes thought that DS9 was sort of the 'black sheep' of the franchise, {which is almost a good thing, since it can sort of appeal to non-fans, if it were to return by explaining previous events since majority of the show was an arc}...

Trek seems to have a lot of stories centered around Klingons or the Romulans looking at the Federation's advancements {The 'Genesis Wave' books come to mind} and believing or rationalizing those advancements as a weapon, so they can acquire or work to build their own.

In this case, some governments may still want the wormhole for themselves...and there is still a lot of cleaning up to do after the Dominion War...

Maybe we could see Captain Chakotay and the Voyager; Admiral Uhura, who is part of Starfleet Intelligence, etc...

{I guess it COULD happen, but it's just how to market such...and how to appeal to those who just casually know about Star Trek. Too, there is a certain movie coming out in 2008 that may reboot the franchise...}

I suppose one could be possible. Perhaps it could be discovered that the Female Changeling was masquerading as Odo and went back to the Great Link, and she somehow controlled Odo into taking her form and going back to the Federation for trial.

While one Earth, it's discovered that Odo is really in their custody, so the Quadrant prepares for one great, final battle. The Enterprise-E picks up Chief O'Brien, along with other Federation ships consisting of the Prometheus, Voyager and a contingent of Klingon, Romulan, Tellarite, Andorian and Cardassian ships converge at Deep Space Nine for the final battle.

An epic battle could ensue, unlike any seen on TV or film. The casts could be brought together in a way to where the entire quadrant is at stake. And, of course, we'd learn the fate of Captain Sisko in the process

Unless it was based on the novel relaunch, I'd honestly rather not have one. The direction Marco Palmieri and his writers have taken the series is nothing less than breathtaking, and the idea of seeing it contradicted doesn't make me a happy Trekker.

I one hundred percent agree about Pocket Books new DS9 novels. They kept me sticking with Star Trek when I gave up on Enterprise by 2002.

No, it's not possible. After 7 years you probably couldn't get enough of the actors yet, and no studio is going to pay to have a DS9 movie made when even the last TNG film did poorly, and TNG had much better ratings. DS( was a great show, and it's my favorite Trek, but it doesn't had a wide enough appeal to come back after so long.

I can agree with trying to get the actors together; however, I think if someone like Peter Jackson, or Guillermo del Toro wanted to do a side story of DS9...{with a strong script}...I'm sure a production company would get behind them.

You have shows from the 80's {which are somewhat unknown to younger people} and older shows from the 60's {where a lot of us where not even born} that are being revived.

I think it could work, but introducing this new brand of Trek to people who remember Kirk, Spock, and 'that bald guy'...or that character who looks like a dog {a description I've heard made of Worf}.

I feel like 24th century Trek is pretty much done. It will continue on in literature (as the DS9 Relaunch has done so well) but there's no way we'll see DS9 (or TNG or VOY) on the screen again.

Trek is going into a whole new direction with JJ Abrams and Trek XI. If successful, I think any future Trek projects will continue off of that.

Since Star Trek XI will be out in December 2008, I do not see a Star Trek XII till around 2012 or 2014. Since Voyager, DS9 and TNG have been skipped over for the back to college days of Kirk and company: it is a long shot that Voyager or TNG will get a shot at the big screen. The cast of TNG has made it clear they are too old to play their characters. So that begs the question about Voyager and DS9. With Voyager, I do not see any post Voyager movie, as the mission of the show was the return home.
With DS9, it was an open question about the return of Ben. This has to be the key to the movie, dealing with the return of Ben and the information from those aliens. How it will play out with the cast members, and if they want to return into their characters, and if other cast members from Voyager and TNG want to blend into the movie: that is the question. There are a number of cast members that have moved on with other projects, like the character of Ezri Dax with The Dead Zone, as well as the other characters.

2012 or 2014? For the first 10 movies, the break between successive movies was always in the 2-4 year range. 2.5 years was fairly common for many of them. It was only after Nemesis that we got a 6 year wait (because Paramount had no idea what to do with the movie franchise at that point). Why would there be *another* 6 year wait after Trek XI? That doesn't make sense.

Because the franchise of Star Trek is burned out. With Star Trek XI, I see the show will go into a TV show with a younger Kirk and company. With the average of 7 years with Voyager, TNG and DS9, I see Star Trek XII will be around 2012 - 2014 to bring in a new TV show.

I think CBS would be nuts to commission another TV show. If this movie is successful, another one two or three years down the road isn't impossible, but I imagine a TV show isn't in the cards at this point.

The only DS9 movie I'd want is an adaptation of "Avatar," the first two DS9 relaunch novels.

DS9 is my favorite Trek series, but I gotta say - no, I don't think it's possible.

The strategy for resurrecting Trek now is to take the most well-known elements - Kirk, Spock, Enterprise - and rebuild the franchise around them. That will take up the time and budget for movies and sometime probably not too long from now, TV as well, if the movie strategy succeeds.

DS9 just isn't part of popular awareness of Star Trek. By the time it becomes a factor again, they would need to recast the roles. But why present those characters in particular? By that time, there will be a new staff who can create new characters, spinning off Trek XI's successful resurrection of Trek (if it isn't successful, gurk, let's not go there, but DS9 wouldn't be in the picture in that case either.)

And no, they won't be making made for TV movies or made for DVD movies. That would devalue the brand by making it seem cheap. What they need to do now is present Star Trek as a premium, high-quality brand worthy of respect.

None of this reflects my lack of faith in anyone's ability to make a good made-for-DVD DS9 movie. It's more about brand management, image and marketing.

It depends on a number of factors coming together in a few years - is Trek XI a big hit? How about sci fi on TV? There are a fair number of genre shows debuting on major networks, if they do well and the trend continues, all the networks may feel better about branching out into the riskier area of space-opera sci fi (the current crop of shows are "safer" with procedural/law enforcement and familiar real-world elements)

CBS is notably lagging in having a buzzworthy genre show, that's a big reason why they resurrected Jericho, which barely qualifies as sci fi. CBS would have to get a lot gutsier, but it's in a comfortable position now and might feel they could take risks.

It's not impossible that another network besides CBS would negotiate to get Trek.

I'ld say now is not the time for a DS9 movie, mainly because the focus is currently on nuTOS (or neo-TOS as I call it) and JJ Abram's new movie.

In 2015, who knows? By then, the neo-TOS phase should have petered out, leaving the way open for a different kind of Trek. I agree that currently DS9 is the only 24th century Trek series that has a chance for a revival because of its reputation for being a different Trek, and has a rich backstory to build upon. That's when a DS9 movie *could* happen. Of course, this is all just plain speculation on my part hehe but I do hope it happens!

There will not be a DS9 movie.
The characters on the show have moved on with other projects within their lives. Second, for the rest of their lives they can always make the money performing within the star trek conventions. They get royalties from their likeness on posters and other merchandise with their likeness till the day they die. Their children and their offspring will get royalties of their likeness and other legal merchandise contracts for fifty years after their deaths.

3 years after Trek XI the actors themselves will start being too old to successfully reprise their roles in a TV series. Not only that, how would they guage the possibility of a TV series based off of a single movie. Not to mention I don't think JJ and crew are going to stick with Trek long enough to care anyway, I think JJ is doing the movie for the sole purpose of saying that he wrote original Trek with Kirk, Spock and the whole character base. To me it seems like a career/publicity stunt that he is doing with Trek XI.

As for DS9, I don't think there was enough left after the series to carry a movie. If a couple of characters wanted to integrate into another project I think that would work.

From what I've heard of the new Trek film I don't like the direction it's going. Would I want a DS9 film/miniseries? To be honest has a fan I would LOVE it. But only if it was the post-Dominion war aftermath. Something realistic you know. Not the usual pro federation crap. Something more realistic like for example the Allies can only send a limited amount of ships to the Gamma Quadrant and no colonies over there.

I agree with many of the posters here, as we seem to be on the same page: Basically, it all depends on the little film coming in 08.'

If it is a success, more Trek on the way...{although, I think TNG, DS9, and all the others will be either forgotten or re-imagined in a way--the characters showing up in different guises...i.e. Picard, Sisko, Janeway may have racial or gender changes, if they exist in the rebooted universe}...

If the film is a moderate or minor success {moreso with fans than casual viewers}, we may see something after the 24th century....on the big screen or small screen in a couple of years...

Well...

At least we have the novels, hm?
