Introducing someone to Voyager

If you had someone who was familiar with the Trek world but hasn't seen Voyager what episode would you show them? Besides Caretaker (which is not the best episode but it's the pilot after all)

If someone's new to a show, I think the best thing to do is watch all the episodes in the proper order.
Since VOY is basically an episodic show, all that person would need to see would be CARETAKER, SCORPION, THE GIFT and ENDGAME. These would basically tell them the "story" of Voyager.

However, this would be a very poor journey and they'd miss most of the fun.

Not "The Gift"! :barf:
That episode is horrible.

So for Sophie74656's question: I do think that Voyager should be watched in order. Start with "Caretaker" which in my opinion is the best pilot episode I've ever seen and one of the top 5 best episodes of Voyager and continue through the seasons. Just watching one episode here and one episode there doesn't give the right impression of the show and there's also a risk that some important events will be missed, somethghing which can cause confusion later on while watching it.

Either watch it in order or just find one of those 'best of' lists for each season but still starting with Season1 and then Season 2 and so on. When I want to rewatch a show nowadays I usually start with the ones most memorable, so for Voyager it's stuff like "Living Witness" or "Latent Image" but without seeing the character development of the Doctor that stuff wouldn't resonate so much, I feel.

All the two parters (except Unimatrix Zero. That made...little sense to me).

I personally would show the ensemble episodes.

Season 1-The Cloud (I know it has its detractors but it does reveal the early 'version' of the characters.)

Season 2 is a little tricky because that season is as close to episodic was we get so I can't make a judgement there.

Season 3 Fair Trade. The ship has is actually moving! The beginning of the realization that this crew is a family and while it wasn't a 'decision' made in the show, it's around the time when the crew stopped looking for a 'short cut' home and settled on smaller jumps instead.
Worst Case Scenario-Kind of Tom heavy but pretty much another ensemble episode

Season 4 Either Waking Moments or Hope and Fear. Hope and Fear is a little Janeway/Seven Heavy but most of the rest of the cast have something to do.

Season 5 Night. The Journey is getting to everyone.

Season 6-Dragon's Teeth (not quite an ensemble episode but close) or Pathfinder.

Season 7-Author Author. We can see how much the characters have changed over the years.
Endgame of course.

I actually like THE GIFT, it was a nice send-off for Kes.
However, the question did not refer to our favourite episodes but to the episodes that constituted a good way of introducing someone to the show. And if the person in question does not see THE GIFT, they won't understand what's going on. Therefore, watching THE GIFT is a must for everyone who doesn't know the show.

I agree with that I think The Gift was good a really nice way to send her off

I would be scared away by "Caretaker" if I hadn't been a huge fan before watching it. Sorry, but I really can't stand the episode. It's damn hard to make a good start to a show after all, so that's alright in my opinion.

I don't entirely disagree with this. It's not a fantastic episode but i think it woukd be important to understanding the show.

I don't think the pilot of TNG was fantastic either

"The Gift" is a horrible episode. No 2 on my "Voyager least like episodes"

Thin, unconvincing with an unrealistic scenario and full with holes.

I guess that the bad excuse for a writer who wrote it did it during a coffe break or sitting on the toilet.

I do see your point about how necessary it could be to watch it to get a gripabout Kes's leaving. But it could also be seen as an example of how bad Voyager actually could be on rare occasions.

That episode shold never have been filmed and produced.

And there should never have been a send-off.

On the other hand, I would highly reccomend episodes like "Jetrel", "Persistence Of Vision", "Cold Fire", "Resistance", the whole Jonas arc, Basics, "Futures End and "The Swarm" to watch really good Voyager episodes.

In your opinion.

As you can see there are those here who like the episode. Personally even if I didn't like an episode I wouldn't say such mean things about those involved

I didn't like that they sent Kes off but I like the way they did it. She became a being of light and was able to do the very thing she wanted to do from the beginning...explore in a whole new way.
I'm glad they used her as a way to get past Borg space. I know some think the Borg were overused in Voyager but we really didn't need to see them several times a season.

I understand your frustration but you can't just expect a newcomer to the show to stop before Kes leaves.
Most things happening on Voyager came after Seven arrived and Voyager is basically "the big borg show" so Seven and the borg are essentially a must for everyone who have never seen it before.
That said, I'd like to stress again that if someone hasn't seen something before, they should take it as it is and form their own opinion about it. This means watching ALL the episodes, even that horrible FURY. This will help them decide which episodes they would like to see on a rewatch.
Mind you guys, I'm watching the show for the 35th time and I've never skipped an episode. Love the whole thing.
And of course, I've seen SCORPION like 200 times already ...

That's commitment. ;)

Yeah ... Janeway totally rocks in my book ... :bolian:

Scorpion could hook in almost anyone!
And so does SCORPION. What a story, my God! Can't get enough of it! :bolian::bolian::bolian:
And neither can I of the Delta Quadrant! It seems like a very interesting place to explore.
The only thing missing is that no author has ever given thoughts to writing a good Hirogen-based novel. I'm missing that very much! :(

My gut says start with "Year of Hell." I love it, but that's not the point. I love "Caretaker," but I know many who don't. "Year of Hell" seems very widely acclaimed by a broad cross section of Voyager fans, Star Trek fans who don't love Voyager and television critics who approximate something of the so-called "casual viewer." So there's a good chance a new viewer will like it no matter his or her taste and background. And it's a big, fun adventure that gives most all the characters something to do.
