Introducing people to a show.

A co-worker has recently started watching Lost (either on DVD or some-kind-of similar TV-OnDemand service) and I've been chatting with him about it, gimping my comments a bit to early S2 where he is now. Been interesting to see his reaction to the series as early as he is and he knows nothing about what will happen later in the series. I kind a feel bad for him sometimes when he asks things like, "Is this ever explained?"

:(

There's another lady co-worker whom another guy and I have been telling she needs to watch 'House' we figure it's a show she'd enjoy. So I leant her my S1 DVDs last Friday, she's blazed through the whole season in a week and I'm bringing her S2 tomorrow. she's really enjoying the show. :)

Are there any series you've introduced others to or whom you've talked to who're just recently started watching an established series?

I introduced Dexter to a couple of college roommates, and both loved it. I also introduced The Wire to a roommate, and he was obsessed with it as I was by the end of the series. I own quite a bit of television on DVD, so I figure, why not share?

I've introduced a lot of shows to my girlfriend. She watches almost everything I watch, and likes them a lot. She returned the favor by introducing me to Firefly.

Right now we're watching TOS and 24, and I hope to do The Prisoner after that.

So far her favorite show we watched was DS9, followed by TNG and Dexter.

She also really liked life on mars (U.K. version). We must've blazed through it in two days.

I got my roommate hooked on True Blood, he got me hooked on NCIS.
I got about 15 people hooked on Lost. I only showed it to one person who didn't like it because they thought it was too much like a horror movie and they didn't like to be scared.

I've successfully hooked seven people onto nuBSG. Every single person who I've persuaded to watch it has loved it, with the exception of my stepbrother. He's 19 and the only thing he watches on TV is Family Guy and anime, so his tastes are a bit skewed and weird to begin with.

I've also gotten two others into Dexter and two people into Lost.

I have introduced my best pal to a lot of shows. She and her husband are older than me (and even my hubby), but they are big TV nerds, just like us.

I got them hooked on Dexter, Deadwood, Life on Mars (UK), Firefly, and then I'm working on getting them into LOST.

Sadly most in my social circle these days are too busy to go out and watch TV shows I recommend, but I have no life so the same doesn't apply to me, and most recently I was introduced to Deadwood this way. A friend of mine is also telling me I need to watch Lost, but while I don't mind digging into a show like Deadwood with only a few dozen episodes, I won't have time to watch Lost for awhile yet.

It is interesting to see how newcomers react to established shows. Doctor Who is the biggie because in 2005 when it came back lots of people had never seen the original, and I remember reading either here or on another board a few people who honestly wondered how a series was expected to survive after losing its lead actor. (Never mind DW had done so, what, 8 times previous?) And after the show returned to UK broadcasts, where at least the name Doctor Who was known, it was then interesting to see the reaction of American audiences -- many of whom had never seen the show before -- when Sci-Fi eventually showed it. Of course you'll always get the "what is this crap?" element but it's quite fun to see someone really "get it". I got a similar feeling when a few people I knew who had never had any interest in Star Trek - hated it, actually - went to see the new movie and walked away virtually Trekkies. Casino Royale did the same thing with some people with regards to James Bond.

I got my best friend, and by extension her husband, hooked on Stargate Atlantis, Doctor Who, & Torchwood. They held my Doctor Who season sets captive for months. They became such fanatics that it was through them that I saw "The Next Doctor," "Planet of the Dead," & The Sarah Jane Adventures. I'm now lagging behind them because I haven't seen "Children of Earth" yet. However, the old Doctor Who has been a harder sell.

I also got her hooked on Battlestar Galactica for a little while. I gave her Season 1. When she finished it, she called me, desperate for me to give her Season 2. After she finished that, I asked her if she wanted me to loan her Season 3. She said, "No, that's OK."

I'm trying to figure out what to try to sell her on next. I'm thinking either Dollhouse, Law & Order, Odyssey 5, Red Dwarf, or Wonderfalls.

I just sold a bunch of people on entourage. I've tried with curb your enthusiasm and dexter, but it's difficult without overselling the show and basically creating a impossible standard to live up to.

Deadwood, Firefly (while it was still aired), The West Wing and Friday Night Lights...

i'm still trying to get more people to watch Friday Night Lights because it's a damn good show. but it's tough to convince people that you don't need to know or like football to enjoy it.

so to everyone reading, watch Friday Night Lights!

The Wire - got several people here to watch it. I even had a deal with Starbreaker that I'd watch S1 Dexter if he watched S1 of The Wire. I held up my end. He didn't. :(

Doctor Who - my roommate and his friend are now addicts

BSG (2004) - my roommate had very little to do a few summers ago and got into my DVDs. She went through BSG last because it was science fiction and to her great surprise (and mine) became hooked.

Angel/Buffy - I nagged a few people to watch and they eventually did and got hooked

The Office (US) - I made my parents watch it. At first they were like :wtf: but now they love it.

The Wire - got several people here to watch it. I even had a deal with Starbreaker that I'd watch S1 Dexter if he watched S1 of The Wire. I held up my end. He didn't. :(

I just got it. Give me a couple of weeks to go through it. :)

I've sold people on Dead Like Me, nuBSG, and Over There. My buddy's wife asked me what she should pick up in box set and I pointed her at those three. She got he extended family(inlaws, brother, nephew) hooked on all three as well.
