INSURRECTION has a lot on offer. For one thing, it does go down some very interesting roads, with its relocating entire communities and intertwining that dilemma with the Universal Fear of Growing Old ... and dying from it. The return of Imzadi, between Riker and Troi was very welcome, indeed! Very charming, also. After so many years on TNG, Riker & Troi have had a plethora of lovers and by the time we meet them again, in this feature, it seems like they've had enough of all that. After all their stops and starts, they're still Imzadi ... only this time, they're ready to do something about it. Which a lot of TNG fans think was great, myself included. And INSURRECTION doesn't feel like the second side of the same saga, with regard to FIRST CONTACT. I would love to have seen changes here ... there ... in the story. But this movie stands on its own and I like that about it.
When THE VOYAGE HOME was greenlit, they told Lenny, literally, "... go make YOUR movie!" Every director's dream, right? What's Nimoy do with it, though? Presents us with corny $ave the Whale themes and banal "humour" that didn't even qualify this movie as a comedy. It was completely without edge - by design, admittedly. But that direction was a mistake, in my view. TVH needed that edge to make it interesting and it's just not. I like aspects about the movie, such as this presentation of JUST the TOS crew on the bird of prey, without all of these extras trying to look busy on the ship. Things along those lines. But overall, I don't get how this movie could've become the success it became. I just can't see it ...
