Insurrection: Snore fest

I rented Nemesis on dvd and watched it it my friend when it came out, most of them have never watched a Star Trek movie again.

Similar experience. I got my friend into Trek with Voyager (a good gateway drug, IMO) and then made him watch Nemesis. He told me if that was the first Star Trek he saw he wouldn’t have watched any ever again.

There were Trekkies who loved Into Darkness so much that they felt confident dragging friends to the next one?
Maybe not, but ID seemed to go down ok with the non Trekkie average Joe audience who weren't so bothered about 'white khan', remaking end of TWOK etc

No, I know...and it has fans to be sure. But you were speaking of Trekkies squirming during a follow up that wasn't as good. Plus, I was mostly just making a bad joke.

P.S. Beyond rules, ID drools. ;)

Why couldn't the Son'a and the Ba'ku just have shared the planet? There were only 600 Ba'ku. Just leave them alone in their little village and let the Son'a immigrate to other parts of the planet.

The Ba'ku could be alotted their own sovereign zone/country. Even with billions of Son'a immigrants it might be hundreds of years before any contact or conflict might be made between the two.

I don't believe this possibility is ever discussed in the film even though it's the most obvious solution to the conflict.

Still, I like the film better than First Contact (don't hate me) and Nemesis. It isn't overly dark nor does it inundate the viewer with the show' s mythology.

My biggest problem with INS is the above mentioned plot hole and the fact that we don't get to know more of the Ba'ku.

It is mentioned that the natural process would take decades and some of the Son'a don't have that long (they are also motivated by revenge not just physical needs which cannot be left out of the puzzle).

The Admiral also says they don't wish to live in that section of the galaxy and nobody does (except the Baku, Picard I believe adds).

And Picard no longer listens to classical music... Next thing you know he's gonna speed drive like crazy in the dunes while laughing like a moron!

I think he is allowed different moods and music to suit them. Picard is too experienced in life to only have one acceptable genre.

It's aight. Middle of the road two parter episode presented as a feature film.

Less offensive than Nemesis and less nonsensical than Generations.

When I think of this movie, which doesn't happen very often, the first image that comes to mind is Data playing in the fields with a bunch of kids.

This is actually why object to the film so strongly. It was such an unambitious, tepid, non-event. At least Nemesis tried to be a big movie, and failed. Insurrection tried for virtually nothing. It was so unremarkable.

That's unforgivable with your $60M major science fiction adventure movie. Personally I find that vastly more offensive than a glorious failure like NEM or GEN.

^Funny, that's exactly how I feel about the TOS films with TFF. Not that I'm interested in opening that can of worms again. But I agree with you about INS.

Like they're going to care about anything unless it doesn't go "pew pew boom boom"? Just wait until the nerds rewrite some of their soap opera and talk show scripts. :guffaw:

Just like ST:The Motionless Picture, Insurrection would have been decent trimmed to half its length and shown as a TV episode.

For the purposes of telling the story they're evidently attempting to tell, if anything I think the film needs to be longer as there are so many unresolved questions as to what's going on that the film ideally would attempt to address those in some manner.

I think Insurrection and ID was similar to what happened with The Last Jedi. A lot people did go see it, but was either divided by it, or flat out didn't like it.

And then they take it out on the next movie. No one goes to see it. With The Last Jedi, it was Solo. With ID, it was Beyond. With Insurrection, it was Nemesis.

It was too much like a TV episode to hold up as a movie. Silly stuff in it too. Worf has no reason to be in it, but he is.

You can spot several mistakes in the special effects.

On top of that, the Baku settled the planet before the Federation existed. The Feds violated the Prime Directive and their sovereignty.

Wasn't the planet in Klingon space prior to being ceded to the Federation? In other words, weren't the Baku basically squatting?

...and for just a second I imagined how this would go if it was the Klingons involved rather than Starfleet...

The pre-Federation Klingons would have probably used the Baku for target practice.

And whose space was it in prior to the Klingons, the Hurq maybe.

And whose space before them? Through the eons that area of space could have changed hands thousands of time.
