After 15 years (almost as long as the first long wait!), we're getting one last Indiana Jones adventure. With James Mangold at the helm and Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Mads Mikkelsen on opposite sides of the adventure, I'm very excited about this conclusion.

I enjoyed it. Lots of emotional beats. I swear, when Indy infers that Helena considers him a 'mark' that's the most pain we've seen Indiana Jones feel through the entire series of being shot, punched, drugged, dragged, etc. And the following bit about his son of course.

I also liked the bit where, while Helena is celebrating their escape, Indy breaks in to mention his friend had just been killed. It's something that might've gone unmentioned in others films - even other ones in this series.

I felt the 1950s flashback de-aging was more effective than the 1945-era. Hearing 'old' Ford's voice come out of a 'young' virtual Indy was somewhat off-putting.

Sallah singing 'A British Tar' offscreen at the end got a great laugh from the audience. Several people clapped at the end.

I took my son and it occurred to me the summer he’s 12 he got to see new movies with Michael Keaton as Batman and Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones…just like me.

The thing I liked most about the film was seeing Indy and Marion together at the end. It was lovely that Ms. Shaw managed to make this happen and for those two characters to spend the rest of their lives together.

I would rate this film fourth on my list of the Indy films. It is better than the last film, but not as good or as great as the first three. Thankfully, there were no asinine set pieces, like Indy surviving a nuclear blast.

Didn’t like it one bit. It was overly-long, boring, and completely hollow. The action sequences are so over the top; as if lifted directly out of a Marvel film. Indiana Jones is many things, but, superhero he is not.

It lacks the fun and spark that made the earlier films so enjoyable for me. I would never have expected to hate a movie this much, but I did. I’d rather watch Crystal Skull for 24 hours straight.

I saw it a few days ago. It was alright. I don’t get the fuss online that it’s the worst movie though. I disagree that they made Indy weak and that he has to be saved constantly. That was only true at the end and only because he was shot. The only thing I didn’t like was killing his son. That just felt very mean spirited to me and not necessary at all.
It’s not the best but still better than Temple of Doom. I can’t stand that one.

Still hasn’t lost an eye. We are going to need another movie. :)

Wow. Didn't think about that. My son is 8. I was 8 in '89. Makes these movies infinitely better seeing them through his eyes.

THAT bad? In my case, I lost most interest halfway through with DESTINY...

I got hazy a bit during each of what felt like 3-4 chase scenes. The one in Tangiers felt like it went on a lot longer than it had to be.
I also felt that the intro sequence, which I mostly enjoyed, went on too long. There was a lot of running through train cars filled with Nazis back and forth. The whole movie probably could've been 20 minutes shorter without much lost.

THAT bad? In my case, I lost most interest halfway through with DESTINY, But I still maintain your verdict's unfair.

Weren't the first three Jones films over the top? Or STAR WARS, for that matter, which was a major inspiration for RAIDERS' kitchen-sink approach?

Then let it be unfair. I’m not going to debate my verdict.

I learned about the film's plot and have decided not to watch it. At least until I find myself in the mood to tolerate it.

This film is a wonderful conclusion to the Indiana Jones franchise that captured the magic of the old days, while at the same time, reflected on the passage of time and accepted that it continues marching forward whether you want to or not. Whether you're a grumpy graverobber who has seen his profession change or a Nazi who wants to reclaim the glory days and do them "better."

One of the things I've always loved about Indiana Jones films is the globetrotting and this one had it in spades, but not only that, we see something in this film that none of the previous four ever touched upon: Exploring the sea. It's only a shame that it was only a couple of scenes, but it was still a refreshing sequence to watch and left me lamenting that we never got a film exploring Atlantis (yeah, I know a video game or something else did, but that's not the same).

What was particularly intriguing was how that exploration pivoted and further embraced the sci-fi elements that the previous film initiated. I loved seeing ancient Greece in full battle with Rome, even briefly meeting Archimedes and learning the truth about the Dial of Destiny. I also greatly appreciated how the film resisted the urge to time travel to nostalgia and revisit past film events (which was a genuine worry) as well as resisting visiting Nazi Germany yet again.

Indy's desire to remain in the past was a fascinating notion, not just because of his love for history and archaeology, but also because it immediately made me think of Belloq's quip about Indy becoming history when he attempted to seal Indy and Marion into the Well of Souls. How ironic that Indy wanted to do exactly that at the end of his life and would've gotten away it, too, if it weren't for that meddling Helena! (Sorry, not sorry)

And speaking of whom, Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Helena is a phenomenal addition to the Indy mythos and is easily the best character since Marion herself. I loved her vibrant can-do attitude and deliberate acts against all expectations (whether anti-feminism, grumpy Indy, or whomever else stood in her way). This is Harrison Ford's final adventure, but I would not be opposed to her carrying the fedora onwards.

Lastly, their appearances were brief but it was wonderful to see Marion and Sallah once more. I initially bristled at breaking up Indy and Marion yet again until we learned the true nature of that break-up and loved how that played with the main themes of time passing. Thankefully they reconciled in the a believable fashion and I definitely teared up when they reenacted that famous Raiders scene but in reverse.

I do wish Sallah had more to do and I was surprised that John Rhys Davies took this small role after turning down the wedding cameo for The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I would've loved it if Sallah had played some part with either the diving expedition and/or the Ear of Dionysus sequence but I can see why neither of those happened (either he would've been killed off or wouldn't have been physically be able to). Nonetheless, we did get to hear Sallah sing once more and that made his small role worth it.

In the end, my rankings are (after just rewatching all of the previous films this week):

1. The Last Crusade
2. Raiders of the Lost Ark*
3. The Dial of Destiny
4. The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
5. The Temple of Doom

*I recognize that Raiders of the Lost Ark is largely the superior film (and not just because of Marion) but nostalgia is a potent thing and The Last Crusade was my first Indy film. Plus, I find the Grail quest far more riveting than the Ark quest (even if the former has been way overdone at this point).

Edit to add:

I enjoyed it. Lots of emotional beats. I swear, when Indy infers that Helena considers him a 'mark' that's the most pain we've seen Indiana Jones feel through the entire series of being shot, punched, drugged, dragged, etc. And the following bit about his son of course.
Yes, I love that quiet beat of Indy feeling hurt by the "mark" comment. It was almost a blink-and-you-miss-it moment but I greatly appreciated it.

I also liked the bit where, while Helena is celebrating their escape, Indy breaks in to mention his friend had just been killed. It's something that might've gone unmentioned in others films - even other ones in this series.
YES. I loved that, too. Most films would zoom pass that with no more than a tear on someone's face, so I loved Indy calling that out and Helena genuinely realizing she fucked up.

I felt the 1950s flashback de-aging was more effective than the 1945-era. Hearing 'old' Ford's voice come out of a 'young' virtual Indy was somewhat off-putting.
For the most part, the de-aging worked for me although there were a few moments with Mads' face looked "too clean and smooth." I agree Ford's old voice was a bit jarring at first but for the most part it didn't bother me, especially during the action sequences.

Sallah singing 'A British Tar' offscreen at the end got a great laugh from the audience. Several people clapped at the end.
Sadly, I was the only one to laugh at my showing but there weren't many people there.

I took my son and it occurred to me the summer he’s 12 he got to see new movies with Michael Keaton as Batman and Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones…just like me.
That is fantastic. I'm very happy that you were able to share that with your son.

I was a little worried when I started seeing the mixed reviews (not including the review-bombing morons) but I'm thankful to report that this was quite an enjoyable Indy experience. For me, it doesn't touch Raiders or Crusade, but I never expected it to, and it's miles ahead of Skull. I'm going to give it some time to avoid recency bias, but this might actually end up being my third favorite entry in the series, since Temple has gone down somewhat in my estimation over the years.

I agree with others that some of the action scenes dragged on for a bit, and while I really enjoyed the World War II era prologue (everything official that I've seen seems to indicate that sequence is set in 1944, but the dialogue implies that it's in 1945, very close to the end of the war) I do think it could have been trimmed just a bit. That said, I was never bored.

Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, whether you liked it or loathed it, didn't really feel to me like a satisfying conclusion to Indy's story. I would have been a little sad if it had remained the last chapter in the saga, but thankfully Dial of Destiny has come along and finally given me that real sense of closure I was looking for.

It's unfortunate that Mutt was essentially killed off (though I completely understand why) but I'm glad it was done in a way that really serviced Indy's character and the themes of the movie. And like The Nth Doctor, I was initially disappointed that the movie started off with Indy and Marion separated, and I was worried that we wouldn't see her again, so I was really pleased when she returned at the very end and the two of them reconciled.

I'm just happy that now I can sit down and watch the whole Indiana Jones saga knowing that it will leave me feeling satisfied.

I enjoyed it better than the last Indiana Jones movie, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

I did think the ending where Marion comes back to him at the end after we saw that she went through the full process of divorcing him a little pat. A friend with me who was more into Indiana Jones than I was and had seen young Indiana Jones said that they had to do that because in young Indiana Jones at the end, it was shown that they had grown old together.

Christ! More Nazis again. And for the third time. No wonder "Last Crusade" was my least favorite Indy film for so long. And what they did to the Jones family? Fuck the person whoever came up with the idea.

I take it the mood found you to go see it?

Unfortunately yes. And now I regret it.

I agree that killing his son was rather mean spirited and not really necessary.
It would have been fine if he used the dial to save him.

Or simply had Mutt reported missing in action, with Indy and Marion receiving word that he had been found in the end. Disney has been fridging a good deal of characters lately (mainly in the MCU) and this has left a sour taste in my mouth.

Well i went into it thinking from the reviews it was going to be just terrible, but in fact it was fine, not great, but not the disaster that some revews are giving it, a just fine movie to finsh the franchise on, so as of now my list is....
1. Ark.
2. Crusade
3. Skull
4. Dial
5. Doom.
