Indiana Jones 5. It's official.

I think I'd want to see them at least stick to a period setting, that's the one thing that really helps it to stand out, and feel unique from similar franchises.

Yeah, come to think of it, I don't think making it too modern would work very well. Indy's Indy pretty much due to the era he's experienced, which in due part is part of its pulpy charm. A large reason why Crystal Skull for me felt off was that it was starting to feel a little too modern, if that makes any sense.

Indiana Jones in the modern era is just Uncharted. We already have Uncharted, it's great. I want to see Indy punching Nazis.

And they are making an Uncharted movie, with Tom Holland as Drake and Mark Wahlberg as Sully, so yeah, I don't think they would want to start encroaching on that territory.

Between modern film stocks, CGI and digital enhancement and the like, plus the shift to 1957, yeah, I can see that.

Crystal Skull, while still better than Temple of Doom, just made some really odd script decisions. There's no reason John Hurt's character shouldn't have been Abner Ravenwood, and Ray Winstone's constant double-crossing of everyone just got incredibly old very quickly.

Harrison Ford is not the voice of the animatronic Indy in the Indiana Jones Adventure at Disneyland. He was supposed to though…

I read this story on a Disney theme park fan site years ago. He went into a recording studio to record the needed lines before the attraction opened. But it also included lines specific for tv commercials that he never agreed to and just walked out. It would have been around same Robin Williams got mad at Disney over Aladdin. He was not supposed to be used to advertise the movie at all. But used him in commercials - possibly for toys too.

When Drew Struzan was asked to paint the Indiana Jones Adventure poster Disney had not even got Harrison’s permission to use his likeness. So Struzan called Ford personally to get permission. Harrison told him if he was doing it, it was ok. Having long admired how Drew Struzan painted him.

Personally, I think they are much more likely to eventually start over. If you do "Indy's kid" then the stories are forced to be set decades after Indy's most interesting era. If you recast you can jump straight back into the '30s again. Plus, I'd argue that more people want to see Indiana Jones than "someone related to Indiana Jones".

It'svery easy to fix, we just have Nazi villian name 'Nero' go back is time and alter indy's time! This way we can recast Indy with someone like, idk, Chris Pine maybe. Im sure no one has ever thought of that idea! LOL

Yeah, I guess it must have been a confluence of different things all adding to the experience, and then to cap it off with the aliens while a good idea in general, its execution was just odd, and unsatisfying. I think the best part of that movie is the motorcycle chase in town. Everything after that seems to go off the rails. It kind of felt like a fish out of water story too, because so much of it, possibly unintentional, felt like he was out of his element. That said, I feel like possibly telling a story from his earlier time when he was in his prime.

A good point was also raised by someone earlier about WWII. What happened to Indy during WWII? That's a gap where they could use to tell a story. I could see him getting drafted into the Intelligence service, with his archeology travel being a perfect cover.

Now, I haven't seen the TV series, but I'd like to possibly see a prequel where he's just beginning to be estasblished, possibly having just gotten his job at the university.

This is hitting the rounds on the internet.

If they recast they should jump back to the late 20s and cover his relationship with Marion and falling out with Abner. It would take a bit of thinking to make it fit the dialogue in Raiders and sufficiently non-creepy to be acceptable to modern audiences. I have some ideas about that.

I believe the title is legit.
Are we doing Aliens again? But those UFOs look like those man made ones.

I was thinking more along the lines of "Captain America the first avenger" from the sound of it

Mads is Indy's version of Red Skull

The new nazi order is doing something similar but without a tessarect

If this is correct, it makes me wonder if
the film is set in the 1980s, as it reminds me of Ronald Reagan calling the Soviet Union an evil empire. I think it’s unlikely that they’ve jumped as far ahead 1983 when he made that speech, but Indy did take on the soviets last time out. But I’m probably just showing my age by remembering that speech!

And of course, there are swastikas in the posters, which I didn’t initially see on my phone, just the title. So yeah, unlikely to be the Russkis.

No, those are those "Haunebu" flying saucers that the Nazis were supposed to have been working on. Oddly enough, I built a model of one, and made a figure of Indy sneaking into the cockpit!

Seeing Indy punching Nazis is great, but we’ve seen how other nostalgist approaches to major franchises have worked out, when the writer takes the familiar aesthetics and just writes them into a generic modern action flick without really understanding the charm.

Besides, you can have a more recent setting and still have Nazis. Just not the ones in charge of the German government.

We know that part of the movie will take place in WWII with a de-aged Harrison Ford. At the moment most people assume it will just be the opening sequence, with the Nazi Train seen in the spy photos. I could see the opening flashback sequence being quite long give us more young Indy action.

Well, that's kind of what I meant by man made.

JJ Abrams isn't directing.

It would be nice if Indy would move on from Nazis. I would much rather have the Saucerman from Mars idea I saw floating around, or something of the 50s style B science fiction style. That's more interesting than more of the same.

I realize this thread is supposed to be about the new movie, but I just wanted to sound off a little about the last one, as I hope that they don't repeat some of the daft stuff from "Crystal Skull." To me, TKOTCS had a handful of oddball choices that just made the whole thing a head-scratcher.

First, the whole real-life phenomenon of crystal skulls is recognized as phoney; a bunch of 19th-century trinkets not based on anything in real Pre-Columbian archaeology. I thought this was already pretty well accepted by the time this movie was being produced, but I could be remembering wrong. I think it would have been better if they had gone with some lost item from ancient myth, legend, religion, etc. or something just totally made-up.

I understand this whole notion of aliens being a throwback to 1950s UFO movies, since Indy was now in a 1950s setting. But to me the CGI looks pretty bogus. They should have gone with practical effects to make the whole alien sequence look like more of a throwback instead of a Playstation 3 game. And then this business of the aliens being from some extradimensional "world between worlds," or whatever they said, just rung hollow for me. If they were going to do 1950s space aliens, then they should have actually done space aliens, from Mars or Venus or someplace in our real universe.

And on top of all that, the huge revelation of "their treasure was nollij!!!" was just an anti-climactic letdown.

Also, maybe Mutt should have been characterized differently, or played by a different actor.
